Cyberbullying Jigsaw Activity for Lower KS 2

Objective:

To understand what is meant by cyberbullying.

To understand the impact cyberbullying will have on others

Start to learn some strategies for dealing with negative situations online

Resources required:

Jigsaw sets provided (pieces numbered 1/2/3/4)

Video ( Girl on Stage)

Different coloured post it notes ( 4 different colours)

Feelings chart ( see below)

Organise the whole group into groups of four (if total number is not divisible by four then ask two pupils to work as one) refer to these groups as the HOME GROUPS.

Each HOME group should appoint a leader/spokesperson.

HOME group Activity 1:

Ask HOME GROUPS to discuss any negative online incidents experienced by or known to members of the group. Activity Leader should decide whether or not to share some of these aloud.

Members of the HOME GROUP should next take a jigsaw piece and look for the number on the back. Activity leader indicates where the 1’s, 2’s, 3’s and 4’s will move to in the room.

At a signal from activity leader all children move into EXPERT GROUPS

EXPERT group Activity:

Show video of girl on stage stopping at least twice as the video runs eg

·  From the start to the point where the girl says ‘Today I’m going to talk about Patti’

·  From this point to approximately half way through the speech

·  From the halfway stopping point to the end of the video and before the messages come on screen

Group 1 – Girl on stage

Group 2 – Patty

Group 3 – Teacher/Adults present

Group 4 – Other children present

Allocate a group/character to focus upon. At each stopping point groups should describe thoughts and feelings of each group/character. Write these on the post it notes and place above, below or on the line on the feelings chart provided.

Together, look at the feelings charts and compare.

Discuss:

What is the point of the video?

If Patti were your friend how would you feel - what would you say or do to her?

What should the teachers do after watching and listening to the girl on stage?

Why do you think the girl would stand up and say this sort of thing out loud?

How would Patti’s parents respond when they heard about this?

What is the point of this video?

If a punch line were to be typed up on the screen at the end of the video – what would it say? (Get the children to type these for all to read).

Replay the whole video including the message at the end .

Make sure everyone knows what cyberbullying is and how

·  it is harmful

·  it is not acceptable

·  it is taken seriously by teachers and parents
