Project Title: Woodworking Plans

Project description: In this project students will be expected to design a rectangular chopping block and determine and compare costs.

Author: Mary Beth Orrange

Curriculum Expert: Timothy Schnaufer, Architectural Technology

Semester Created: Fall 2009

A. Essential Question: How do you plan a woodworking project and compare the cost to purchasing it already made or made for you?

B. Introduction: In this project you will plan two building projects including: determine how much wood is needed, decide the material and labor costs, find the cost of similar items already crafted, and decide what to do.

C. Basic Directions: For the first project you will determine the materials needed for a chopping block, establish costs, and research the price of similar items on the internet. For the second project you will need to calculate the cost of the materials for a deck and calculate the labor costs for your carpenter.

D. Things to Learn before Starting the Project: You will need to know the formulas for area of a rectangle, conversion factors between feet, and inches; including square units. You will need to be able to search the internet for specific items in specific stores.

E. The Project Assignment: follows the grading section

F. Student and Faculty Resources: Search the internet for Home Depot, Lowe's, Crate and Barrel, and wood-working materials.

H. Grading Rubric: Half of the total credit for question #1 and half for question #2.

Name ______Carpenter Projects

Chopping Block

You would like to own a fine wood chopping clock. You determine how much the materials would cost in case you have to ability and tools to make it yourself, then you determine how much it would cost to have a carpenter make one, and finally you go to the internet and research how much it costs to purchase already made.

Your desired chopping block is made by gluing together 9 pieces of fine board, each 2 inches square and 15 inches long.

1. How wide is the block when it is finished?

2. How long is the block when it is finished?

3. How many square inches in the surface of the block?

4. How many square feet in the surface of the block?

5. One piece of finished cherry wood for this project is 2" square by 30" long. How many of these squares you need to purchase for this project? You cannot order ½ pieces, so you need to purchase in whole units.

6. What is the cost of the cherry wood at $19 each piece?

7. The carpenter you use for home projects costs $25 an hour and indicates that he would need 4 hours to make the finished product. How much would he charge you?

8. Go to the internet and search for a similar chopping block at Lowe's, Home Depot, Crate and Barrel, and one other store.
