Part I: General Information

·  Description of town

- Short history and location

The origins of Osijek disappear in the mists of very ancient history; the oldest prehistoric settlement was built on the shores of the river Drava on a slight, now hardly perceptible elevation that runs east to west in the northern part of Retfala. The Celts once moved in this direction - where the waters of the Drava and the Danube created soil good for the life of humans. The trade routes must have wound here between the Thracians and the Etruscans, through the Pannonian woods, where many people would wend. The Romans came as well; during the first century BC they conquered almost the whole Pannonia, and founded a camp called Mursa on the slightly elevated western bank of the Drava. Attila and his Huns sacked Mursa in 441. To the west of the ruins, on a raised terrace and a slight hillock close to the bank, a Slavic settlement was built in the 7th century. The Slav and the Old Croat colonisers named their settlement Osijek. Late medieval Osijek was built on the general area of today’s Fort of Tvrđa. In the historical sources, Osijek is first mentioned in a document of Croatian-Hungarian King Emeric, in 1196, in the Hungarian version as Ezek. Well aware of the strategic and transportation-related importance of Osijek, the Ottoman Turks conquered it in 1526 and ruled the city for 161 years. While they were planning the construction of the military fort to the west of the city wall, the new settlement of Gornji grad, or Upper Town, was created. In summer or early autumn of 1698, the foundation of Lower Town started to the east of the fort. Modelling their approach on that of the lowland forts in Holland, from 1 August 1712 to 1722, the Austrian authorities built the fort according to a plan; at the latter date it was largely finished, but small-scale works continued until the 1760s. In 1792, new, mainly German, colonisers moved into the southern city area, creating a fourth part called Novi grad - New Town. The favourable geographical position of the town, together with commerce and trades, were the main features of Osijek in the18th century. A still greater reinforcement of the city started when the disparate parts were united in 1786, and Osijek was proclaimed a free royal city in 1809. Although in the 19th and 20th century the development of Osijek was marked by the period of Industrial Revolution, it still remained a town with lush greenery, grass lawns, shady gardens, lovely promenades, particularly those along the Drava. Truth to tell, in today’s Osijek, much of the past of what developed it to its current size has remained. But in the present day, those historical contributions that give Osijek its special features have become even stronger: the Baroque opulence of the Fort, the neo-Classic views of Upper and Lower Town, the significant accomplishments of Croatian Art Nouveau in Upper Town, the considerable achievements of the 1960s and 1970s in all parts of the city - particularly in those spreading out to the south.

·  Short Description of the Organising Institution

The first teacher training institution (for class and subject teachers) in this part of Croatia - the Academy of Pedagogy - was founded in 1961/1962. There were 96 students enrolled in the Academy in the first generation and it offered programmes in Croatian Studies, Geography, History, English Studies, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
At the time of restructuring of the Academy of Pedagogy into the Faculty of Pedagogy in 1977, the teaching staff consisted of 7 PhD and 18 MA degree holders. Some twenty years later the structure became significantly different. The Faculty of Pedagogy evolved into an educational and scientific institution with 9 graduate study programmes in humanities, social science, natural science and arts. In 2002/2003 the plans to separate the study programmes in arts and natural science from the Faculty of Pedagogy and to restructure it into the Faculty of Philosophy began.
