Equipment List for PWSD DofE Fall Canoe/Bike/Hike Outdoor Adventure

Trip Oct. 8+9

“Try to pack as light and as efficiently as possible”

Supervisors: Mr. Juce from D.O. , Mr. Waldner and Mr. Wipf from DCS, Mrs. Blackman from RES

Equipment

  • Your PWSD DofE Backpack with all of your gear in it
  • Small day pack for day hike into the burn area and Spruce Island lake (lunch extra clothes, water bottle etc.)
  • Good Sleeping bag – it can go below freezing at night this time of the year!
  • Your PWSD DofE yellow sleeping pad
  • Flashlight or headlamp
  • Personal Hygiene – toothbrush, soap etc., partial roll of toilet paper
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Sunscreen & Lip Balm
  • YourPWSD DofE two person tent and a plastic ground sheet to pitch the tent on top of - to be shared with a partner.
  • Your PWSD DofE cooking pot set for cooking supperetc. to be shared – each set contains pots, plates, cups, cooking utensils etc. for 4 people. You will only need to bring your food and personal cutlery. We have three complete cooking sets which will be sufficient for our group.***You will need to bring your own bowl if you want to have oatmeal or soup.***

Clothing – the idea is to layer

  • 1pr. synthetic long underwearand undershirt (it breathes well and dries quickly)
    2 -3 pr. Light/Medium socks kept in zip lock bags so they stay dry
  • 1or 2 pr. Waterproof shell pants (no blue jeans)
  • Light windproof jacket or insulated jacket
  • Light polar fleece jacket
  • 1 long sleeve fleece shirt
  • 1 t-shirt
  • Broad brim hat
  • 1 pair of leather gloves in case of cold weather and for handling cooking pots
  • It can get cold at night so you should also bring:
  • Toque and mitts/gloves
  • Winter parka and snow pants
  • A good pair of running shoes should work well on the trails, but larger hiking or work boots have more ankle support and are more waterproof
  • Water shoes or sandals for the canoeing/kayaking are nice to have

Students have to menu plan and bring their own foodfor 2 days – PLEASE REMEMBER NO PEANUTS OR NUTS

Although there is no refrigeration, students can bring frozen food which should thaw nicely in time to cook Thursday night. Pre-cooked/packaged food is the easiest to prepare, although it is heavier to carry in.

Lunch on the first day will be packed from home and eaten at Deep Lake.

Make sure you bring enough snacks etc. for 2 full busy days

Possible food to bring………..

  • Ice tea mix/ Hot chocolate mix
  • For SupperOct. 8 and if you want a hot lunch on Oct. 9 here are possible menu suggestions:
  • Packaged pasta or rice like Uncle Bens or Kraft Macaroni and cheese
  • Freeze Dried or dried Food
  • Prepared meats with preservatives like hotdogs, summer sausage etc.
  • Fruit leather
  • Cup of soup – Hearty Noodles etc.
  • Cheese/Pitta Buns/Bread Rolls
  • Breakfast Oct. 8 (Oatmeal/brown sugar/powdered milk/)
  • Prepackaged Oatmeal works well
  • 1litre of waterfor drinking on the trail
  • All water at the campsite must be boiled before use or run through one of the PWSD DofE MSR water filters
  • Knife/Spoon/Fork Snacks– jerky, cheese, fruit leather/bars, nut free granola bars, etc.

Be sure of volumes to cook and eat. All FOOD must be stored in a Bear Proof container at the campsite.

***Absolutely no food/candy/gum etc. allowed in tents***

  • NO CELL PHONES/MP3 PLAYERS/ ELECTRONIC GAMES ETC.

*** There is no cell phone service at the Bob Hill Site***

Cost of the trip has not been determined yet, but it will not be more than $30.00 per student though.

Students MUST ALSO:

  1. Students must complete the Bear Aware Safety quiz before being allowed to go on the trip. The online quiz is date and time stamped. There is a link on the quiz that will take students to the information they require to do the quiz. Click here to go to the quiz.
  2. After the trip, student will also be required to send a thank you letter to PMH for their support in providing funding to buy the equipment used on this adventure.

– Mr. Juce will be checking for compliance with this.

2. Parents will need to sign a field trip permission form that will be issued from their school, and students must hand it to Mr. Juce when we meet at Rossburn Elementary School.

*** All transportation will be done by division staff or the students’ parents.***

October 8-9 DofE Bronze and Pre Silver/Gold Itinerary:

***Unless supervising staff can provide transportation, parents will be required to transport Students from their home school to Rossburn Elementary school on the morning of Oct. 8, and back again to their home school on Oct. 9. ***

**Severe weather may force the cancellation of the trip by the supervisors.***

Itinerary:

Leave your home school at 9:00 on Oct. 8

Meet at Rossburn Elementary School at 9:45

Drive up to the Deep Lake Warden Station and then go 1 km farther north

Hike with Roger Baird Parks Canada RCON officer through a prescribed burn. ***Students will need a day pack with their lunch, snacks, water, jacket, rain clothes etc. and continue hiking up to Deep Lake for lunch.

We drive up to Bob Hill trail head and then we park and hike into the Bob Hill Prairies and further on to Spruce Island Lake if time permits

Back at vehicles take full packs and hike to Bob Hill where Canoes are (1 KM)

Set up tents etc. have supper - we have 4 person cooking kits withpots, plates, cups and cooking utensils.

*** students will need to bring their own cutlery and their own bowl if they want soup etc.

After Supper - Hike to Bob Hill Trail head and call Elk if time and weather permit

2 Activities: Cycling and Canoeing

Mrs. Blackman and Mr. Juce – Canoeing/Kayaking (please bring a life jacket if you have one – if you don’t let Mr. Juce know 204-847-5052)

Mr. Waldner and Mr. Wipf – Cycling (please bring a bike helmet if you have one – if you don’t let Mr. Juce know 204-847-5052)

7:30 Wake up then Breakfast and clean up

8:30 half the students canoe and kayak the other half go mountain biking

10:30 - switch activities

12:30 – lunch then pack up and hike back to vehicles

2:30 arrive back at Rossburn Elementary school for parent pick-up and drive back to your school
