4.environmental management policy

SimuLab is committed to establishing within its personnel an attitude of environmental responsibility, and to establishing sustainable environmental practice wherever feasible. This commitment includes a pro-active approach towards addressing compliance with all environmental legislation and policy directives, and a movement towards environmental best practice in line with the goal of ecological sustainability.

AIMS

SimuLab will endeavour to as far as is reasonably possible:

  • Ensure compliance with all relevant environmental legislation.
  • Promote the efficient use of all resources, particularly energy, and water.
  • Minimise the amount of waste generated by workplace activities.
  • Dispose of any waste generated using the most environmentally sound method.
  • Recycle and reuse resources wherever practical.
  • Integrate environmental care into all aspects of business planning and operational activities.
  • Implement risk management approaches to environmental management by conducting risk assessments of all activities.
  • Provide good corporate leadership by undertaking a best practice approach toward environmental management and encouraging all staff to undertake green practices not only in the workplace, but in their activities outside the workplace as well.

SimuLab aims to modify processes, plant and equipment in a manner that will allow all facilities to become energy efficient, provide safe and environmentally aesthetically pleasing indoor and outdoor spaces and improve the image of the company as being a green operation. The final goal is to be seen as an example of best environmental practice in the laboratory area. Key principles essential to achievement of this goal include:

  • Top level management leadership and commitment.
  • Belief in, and motivation towards, environmental goals by line management.
  • Acceptance of environmental responsibility by all personnel.
  • Continuous monitoring and improvement of environmental performance.
  • Integration of environmental management into everyday operations.

These goals will require SimuLab to develop an environmental management system that will be based on the outlines set out in ISO 14001. This will involve the use of plan-do-check-review cycles to ensure continuous improvement in environmental performance.

The planning phase shall involve an initial environmental audit and report, which will be integrated into the company business plan and provided to section leaders to monitor performance and allow process modification where possible. Checking will involve follow up annual audits to allow comparison of company environmental performance against established criteria for best practice, and the performance of environmental impact assessment of all company activities. Reviews will involve surveys of staff and customers to establish that the environmental goals set by the company match those of the client base.

RESPONSIBILITY

Management will as far as is reasonably practicable meet all of the obligations of current and future environmental legislation and policies. Managers, supervisors and employees will be assigned roles and responsibilities to ensure compliance.

Section managers and supervisors will be accountable for implementing SimuLab environmental policies within their area of responsibility. They will also be responsible for conducting annual environmental performance audits.

Managers and supervisors shall ensure that:

  • There is adequate provision of resources to ensure that environmental commitments are attained.
  • Training is provided for all tasks in the workplace.
  • Environmental policy is communicated to all persons in the workplace.
  • There is continuous monitoring and improvement of environmental training, promotion and policy implementation.

Employees shall ensure that:

  • They adopt all provisions as agreed by management and staff.
  • They report as soon as is possible any environmentally unsound activities or equipment.

CONSULTATION

SimuLab is committed to providing a sound consultation process for environmental matters between management and other staff. Management will seek the input of all employees to help aid in environmental improvement.

REVIEW OF POLICY

SimuLab will review this policy on a regular basis to account for changes in legislation, community expectation, and changes in organisation and methods. In any case this policy MUST be formally reviewed at least every two years.
