Environmental Awareness Group meeting.

11/15/2004 (Provisional)

Present: David Kitchen, Joe Kent, Jessica Kitchin, Al Lane, Carol Summers, Erik Craft, Nina Bhattacharyya, Betsy Andres

Absent: Andrew McBride

Apologies due to other meetings: Chris Stevenson and Steve Nash

Kitchin reported on the ACS grant proposal that she, Amy Terepka, and Stevenson have been working on to study differences between male and female college student recycling and consumption behavior. Bhattacharyya added that the Sierra Club was also working to receive funds from the ACS to purchase some energy efficient light bulbs. These bulbs might be used in conjunction with the study planned by Kitchin, Terepka, and Stevenson.

Plans to celebrate the LEED’s award will continue in conjunction with the President’s Office, which was thinking of some celebration on Earth Day or April 2, (one of) the date(s) of the 175th anniversary celebration of the University.

Al Lane will contact Steve Glass with regard to lighting on the road from the University bus stop up to Three Chopt. Glass might be the appropriate person to contact the City of Richmond about repairing lights damaged after last year’s hurricane.

After again briefly discussing the possibility of incorporating environmental topics into the list of Wellness offerings, the EAG encouraged Stevenson, Kitchin, and Terepka to continue pursuing these ideas.

Craft noted that Kitchen will be leading the Friday brown bag at the Center for Civil Engagement on January 28. The topic will be global warming.

Al Lane will be presenting information on the University recycling program to the Business School on Monday, November 22. Craft has asked Arts and Science if Lane could make a short presentation at its faculty meeting as well. It was suggested that Craft contact Donna Hickey to determine if Lane could meet with Arts and Sciences administrative assistants to discuss recycling policies.

Summers shared her concern (and other faculty’s concern) that there are some buildings whose air quality might be poor due to mold, solvents, and so on. The committee discussed the possibility of requesting that Facilities test for mold and other air problems.
