St Helena Secondary College
Enrolment at St Helena in Year 7, 2016
St HelenaSecondaryCollege is a large school with a Year 7 enrolment of about 250 students. Due to the number of Grade 6 students in the area and because of the high esteem in which the College is held, St Helena is a school with both an ‘enrolment ceiling’an ‘Approved Restricted Neighbourhood Zone’ that applies to all student enrolments at all year levels. This has meant that in the past some students who have applied for a place have missed out.
The DET “Year 6-7 Transitions: Application for Year 7 Placement” forms are distributed by the primary schools early in Term 2 and must be returned to the primary school your child attends. In completing the enrolment application, the important thing is to carefully consider your preferred school and if you list St Helena first, then please make sure you list at least one school without an “enrolment ceiling”. If listing St Helena first, other documents are likely to need to be submitted directly to St Helena, as indicated below.
Schools with “enrolment ceilings” and an Approved Restricted Neighbourhood Zone must take students in this order:
1.NEIGHBOURHOOD RESTRICTED ZONE
All students residing permanently in the restricted neighbourhood zone. An approximate map is attached. If you are close to the boundaries, contact Mr John Ballagh by phone on 9438 8500 or to confirm if you are within the zone. Unfortunately some parents have not used their correct residential address, so the College will require proof of residence: acopy of a current utilities bill, a copy of either your rate notice or lease agreement and a copy of a parent’s driver’s licence. These are to be attached to the enclosed cover sheet (Proof of Residence form) and returned directly to St Helena at the same time as you return your application to your primary school (FRIDAY MAY 22, 2015).
2.SIBLING RIGHTS
Students who reside permanently at the same address as a brother or sister concurrently attending St Helenaare the next group to be offered available places. While St Helena will endeavour to accommodate these students, they must list 3 other preferences in case it is not possible. No other documentation is required.
3.NEAREST RESIDENTIAL ADDRESS OUTSIDE OF RESTRICTED ZONE & CURRICULUM GROUNDS
A number of positions are likely to be available in this category, but not all students will be able to be accommodated. Students must list 2 other school preferences on the DET enrolment form.
Students who reside outside of the restricted zone will be considered initially on the distance to the school. This is measured as a straight line from the residential address to the College. Students living closer to the College will have priority over students who live further away. Therefore, applicants living outside of the restricted zone must also complete the ‘Proof of Residence Form’
Where distance cannot separate two applications the College will refer to the ‘Specific Curriculum Grounds Form’. This form should be completed by all applicants who live outside of the restricted zone and do not have a sibling claim to make. In completing this form parents are stating that St Helena is uniquely placed to offer a “specific curriculum program” for their child and must submit a clear case to the College. Please complete the “Specific Curriculum Grounds” form, attach any relevant information and return it to the College at the same time as you return your application to your primary school. Do not include open references. Brevity is encouraged.
If you believe you reside in the “nearest school” St Helena zone but are not in the Restricted Neighbourhood Zone, you may include this as a factor for consideration in this category.
