Aims / The module aims to provide students with the opportunity to make a detailed and critical study of an area of particular interest to their own practice. This will be achieved through in-depth understanding and critical evaluation of research evidence and its scope for the development for practice
Learning outcomes/objectives / By the end of the module the student will be able to :
  • Have a comprehensive knowledge of the methodologies and the main research designs
  • Demonstrate the ability to differentiate between research study and expert opinion literature and utilise literature to support their study.
  • Demonstrate the ability to critically analyse research evidence with particular focus on methodology
  • Demonstrate the ability to integrate research evidence to practice
  • Identify an appropriate subject emanating from practice for research and develop/formulate an appropriate research question or questions
  • Critically evaluate evidence to support the feasibility of their study.
  • Critically evaluate the evidence to support conclusion and recommendations for practice based on the critical review of research evidence.
  • Use an appropriate search strategy, retrieve and critically review the process relating to literature review.
  • Integrate research findings to practice with discernment to promote evidence-based practice.
  • Enhance own practice through personal/professional development.
  • Select and manage information and completely undertake research activities with diminishing guidance.
  • Take responsibility for the organisation of their learning
  • Engage effectively in relevant professional debate and produce a detailed and coherent dissertation

Content / The following is an outline of the content:
Problem-centering- synthesis of knowledge of methodology
and mode of thinking of different disciplines to examine real life midwifery practice
Selecting a topic-what are you going to investigate?
This session will focus on reflection on practice to enable students to select a topic for exploration in their enquiry. Students are already familiar with reflection models, therefore only a revision session will be provided.
Methods of enquiry: literature review. This session will discuss literature as a research method and will differentiate the forms of literature review and describe the perspectives underlying them.
Planning and carrying out the enquiry: exploring the literature. This session will revise how to conduct a literature review. It explores the stages of a literature review including the decision to be taken at each of the stages. It also contains guidelines for reading and critically analysing research papers through the use of appropriate frameworks.
Writing up the dissertation: This session covers structure, layout and language of writing research /dissertation.
Teaching and learning strategies / The learning outcomes will be supported through lectures, small group discussion, peer presentation and review and problem based learning approaches.

Assessment tasks / The assessment will be by dissertation: This will be in the form of a literature review of primary researchand grey literature, and will be based on a minimum of six and a maximum 10 papers. It will be contained in 8000words. Students will demonstrate understanding of the research process from identification of research problem to choice of methodology, carrying out and writing a research project and make recommendations for practice.
Brief description of module content and/or aims (maximum 80 words) / The module aims to introduce the students to foundation knowledge and skills of carrying out a research project. It will engage with midwifery theoretical and practical knowledge developed during the previous semesters to postulate robust arguments for evidence to be the core of practice.
