The Enneagram spectrum of personality styles has proven to be useful in many contexts: personal, couple, and family therapy; spiritual development; business applications such as leadership and management coaching and team building; learning and teaching styles; et. al.

The Training is designed for individuals wishing to teach and/or use the Enneagram system of personality styles in workshops, small groups, or one-to-one interactions in educational, business, therapeutic, and spiritual development settings. Because the Enneagram touches on many levels of reality, it can be applied at varying levels of intensity and depth. It is a useful tool for personal and interpersonal growth as well as for leadership, management, and team building development. Individuals wishing to enhance their own personal and interpersonal understanding and development can profit from this training.

Participants will learn:

  • The theoretical framework on which the Enneagram is based
  • The key features of the nine Enneagram styles
  • The resourceful and less-resourceful cognitive, emotional, and behavioral schemas of each style
  • The paradigm shifts in response to inner and outer stressors
  • The influence of neighboring styles and subtype variations
  • Methods of presenting the Enneagram to various audiences
  • Different traditions and approaches to the Enneagram and resources available: books, audio and video tapes, test instruments, newsletters, organizations, etc.

Teaching format will include: experiential exercises to foster a practical understanding of the Enneagram's theory and dynamics; panel interviews and discussions to hear the various styles in vivo….

Participants will receive a copy of The Enneagram Spectrum of Personality Styles: an Introductory Guide and a Training Manual with additional information, handouts, and workshop outlines. As part of the Certification process, trainees will be asked to write out their responses to the 30 reflection questions in the Enneagram Spectrum Guide.

“Hi George. Here are some thoughts about how my Training is unique. People who attend my training who have also gone to the Palmer-Daniels and Riso-Hudson programs say my perspective is a little different, I have a somewhat different way of presenting the Enneagram structure and my examples of the styles from my years of experience are unique. They invariably have insights into the Enneagram styles they didn't have before. I've never had anyone complain that they didn't learn anything new. (Think of what a horrible thing that would be for a Five to hear!)

I present the values that lie at the heart of each Enneagram style. So we start with the positive. When we over-idealize our values, we get out of balance and lose our perspective and our personalities start to form. Also the sensitive side of our values are our vulnerabilities. When we over-protect these sensitive areas, our personality gets stronger. Whenever we over-idealize something, we underestimate or diminish its opposite qualities. I present the polarities and rejected parts of each Enneagram style and how we defend against them and project them onto others.
I use some approaches from cognitive psychology and talk about the adaptive and maladaptive (or resourceful and non-resourceful) cognitive, emotional, and behavioral schemas of each type. I also use the metaphor of paradigms to explain the Enneagram styles. Our paradigms give us a perceptual and intuitive edge by allowing us to consider and see things that others might easily miss. But they also create blind spots and put up cognitive, emotional, and behavioral barriers that limit our view, affects, and activities. By shifting to alternate paradigms, we can see, feel, and do things our paradigm doesn't allow us to do. These paradigm shifts involve the arrows and wings.
I present the higher and lower aspects of the three centers and show how to develop each center and how each center gets out of balance.
I demonstrate how to use the Wagner Enneagram Personality Style Scales for typing individuals. I also talk about the other inventories that are available. Though, I must say, the WEPSS is the best researched inventory available and is the only one to be reviewed in the Buros Yearbook of Mental Measurements.
Throughout the training and particularly at the end, we consider ways to present the Enneagram to various groups: religious, educational, therapy, business, personal growth, etc. I provide participants with a 125 page manual which includes handouts and workshop formats that participants may use.
So my training provides a useful way to look at the structure and content of the Enneagram as well as giving helpful hints forpresenting the Enneagram to various audiences in various time frames.
I have a formal and practiced background in clinical psychology (Ph.D.) and applied theology (M.Div.) I was among the first to write a dissertation on the Enneagram (describing the Enneagram theory and types, comparing it with the typologies of Jung and Millon, and designing one of the first Enneagram inventories) and have since been on many masters thesis and dissertation committees on the Enneagram. So I also bring a research perspective to my training program.” Jerome P. Wagner, Ph.D.
