Marissa was very upset when she saw the bad grade on her math homework. “Rather than crying about one bad grade, you should think of a way to improve your study habits,” her friend told her. Marissa agreed with him, so she decided to cut down on time she used for her hobbies. For example, she could spend four more hours a week studying if she stopped reading comic books. Marissa's new study habits led to better grades in all of her classes.

Last Friday, when all the classmates were about to leave school happily for their upcoming weekend, poor Andrea stood alone in the classroom with tears rolling down her cheeks. Right at that moment, Andrea’s best friend, Victor came up to Andrea to show concern for her, asking, “Poor Andrea, what on earth is bothering you? You look quite sad!” Andrea shed tears and answered, “I dare not go home today. You know, I got such an awful grade in my math exam.” She continued, “Now I could imagine what deafening yells would be heard in my house when my mother held my math exam paper in her hand.”

Since Andrea’s mother was a math teacher, Victor was positive that she would feel ashamed to know her daughter failed the math exam at school. Nevertheless, Victor advised Andrea, “I could understand why you dared not go home. But you should keep in mind the saying, ‘Honesty is the best policy’ and learn to face the music.” Most important of all, you should try to get rid of your bad study habit, for

example, reading comic books while studying math at home or copying others’ math homework at school.”

That’s true. After having a long talk with Victor, Andrea decided to be honest not only to her mother but also to herself especially when studying math. Moreover, whenever she had difficulty learning math, she tried to solve each math problem on her own instead of always relying on others to give her the right answers. Now Andrea feels confident when figuring out any math problem. Much to everyone’s surprise, Andrea showed great interest in math and got the highest score in her math exam after several days of hard work and constant practice. From then on, Andrea was always willing to share with her classmates how to learn math in a correct way and encourage them by reminding them “to be always honest” when learning any new things no matter how hard they are.

My beloved students,

I am wondering whether you really understand what is wrong with you either in

your studies at school or in your English writing. I’ve stayed up correcting your English

compositions for several weeks even though I have been busy training students to prepare

for their upcoming English story telling contest in Tainan. It’s almost eight months since

you started to read the English Ivy League Analytical English magazine last September.

Broadly speaking, the monthly magazine must be of great help not only to your reading but

also to your writing. However, much to my disappointment, several of you forgot what you

learned in junior high school and made so many “silly mistakes.” How can you ignore your

being so careless in learning English writing and always make the same mistakes again

and again?

Every time you are not very satisfied with the grades that I gave your monthly magazine,

you look so upset about your grades that you often try hard to argue with me about your grades.

For what did you come to school after all? For getting good grades or for learning new

things? In fact, I am quite worried about the attitude you should have when learning new things

from the magazine. Apparently, what you really care about is the grades you have got

from me rather than what you have learned from the magazine.

Sad to say, most of the students here in Taiwan study hard in order to get good grades

without paying attention to the importance of learning at school. No wonder the students in

Taiwan never find schooling pleasant and interesting. Learning itself should not mean

grading at all. You should learn a lot from your mistakes. However, it seems that most

of the students never think so. That’s why they always make the same mistake for all their

life. In other words, learning never make them smarter and get advanced.

What kind of life would you like to give yourself?
