English & Language Arts Syllabus
Welcome to The Pathway Star Academy Program! My name is Marla Dondasse, and this is my fifteenth year in education. I look forward to spending the year learning and teaching Language Arts with you. Here are a few things to help you understand what we will be doing this year.
Course Description/Objective: The Star Academy Program will incorporate writing, reading, communication, grammar and technology to create the opportunity for students to become life-long learners. This program is accelerated and students are expected to complete assignments in a timely manner as well as participate in cooperative learning groups and class discussions.
Writing: Students will have to be able to write in the expository, narrative, and persuasive genres. Writing assignments will be incorporated into daily instruction while the amount will depend on the lesson.
Grammar: Grammar skills will be taught and incorporated into writing and reading comprehension lessons.
Reading/Literature: Students will be using the Grade 9 Prentice Hall Literaturetext and supplemental workbook. They will also be instructed in Grammar usage using the Easy Grammar Ultimate Series: 180 Daily Teaching Lessons student workbook for grade 9.
Homework: Homework will be given as an extension of daily lessons and students are expected to turn in on time for a grade.
Materials: 1. 1”-2” three-ring binder with at least five divider tabs
2. Black or Blue pens
3. Paper
Class Expectations:
I expect students to
- Follow the school rules.
- Work Hard.
- Always do their best.
- Treat others the way that they want to be treated.
- Respect themselves, others, school & personal property.
School Rules: All school rules are in the Student Handbook and may be found on the Mobile County Public School website. Failure to comply with these rules will result in consequences outlined by said handbook.
Grading System Categories:
VocabularyVocabulary lists and tests are given regularly.
LiteratureReading assignments vary by unit (expeditions).
CompositionJournals, writing practice, and formal essays
Grammar8 parts of speech, punctuation, sentence practice, etc.
MiscellaneousProjects, speeches, performances, etc.
Bell RingerDaily skills practice at beginning of class
Online info: Grades will be posted in a timely manner and can be accessed in INOW.
