Dear Students and Families,

Attached is a packet covering the events planned for the weekend of May 20th-22nd, 2011. As we have done in the past, this weekend offers three related karate events:

  • Shiai
/ – / a local competition between MKA students / May 20th-21st
  • Seminar
/ – / Sensei Avi Rokah (main teacher of the Power brothers) will be in St. Louis / May 21st-22nd
  • Grading
/ – / Sensei Rokah and principle instructors will conduct gradings for students who, based upon their progress, have been invited to test for a new rank. / May 22nd

I would like to make a few points to clarify the philosophy behind our approach.

Why do we have the Shiai?

Competition is the best way for all students (Little Ninjas to black belt) to apply their skills and recognize their progress. Normally this requires traveling to a tournament. Conducting the Shiai within ourown dojo reduces the travel costs and time normally required to attend a karate tournament. It also is great preparation for when we do attend out-of-state tournaments.

Why three events back to back?

First, these events are related. The Shiai enables each student to get very practical feedback on their progress. This feedback encourages more active participation in the seminars (the students pay closer attention and get more out of their time with Sensei Rokah). The seminar, now, gives Sensei time with our students. This is a considerable value-add for the subsequent grading.

Second, we are trying to avoid spotting your calendars with too many karate events. This approach provides a dedicated weekend and leaves the rest of the weekends free for the myriad other activities families engage in. Time is always limited and we are trying to make the best use of all of our time.

Is participation mandatory?

Certainly not; participation in one or all of these events is voluntary. If a student is invited to grade and misses the seminar/grading, it is a personal decision. We routinely holdseminars and gradingsso the student need only wait until the next opportunity. Shotokan karate is not about racing to the next belt level. We offer the Shiai, seminars and gradings to our students as a way to enhance and refine the skills that they are already learning in class.

As always, please feel free to contact myself or my brothers if you have questions, suggestions or concerns.

Best regards,

Chief Instructor
