Course Description:

Welcome to English/Language Arts and Math lab! Your child’s success is important to us! Our goal is to ensure effective learning so that your child will have a positive learning experience.

Every child is unique. Every child learns differently. Every student behaves differently. Different children need different academic and behavioral strategies and interventions for success. In order to meet the needs of all students, we have implemented three tiers of support.

In the first tier, classroom teachers use strategies and materials for students who may need a little extra help.

In the second tier, we create an individual support plan with additional interventions to help students in any specific weaker learning or behavioral areas. In each tier, the student is monitored closely to ensure that the research-based interventions are successful.

For all students who still experience difficulty, there is a third tier, that provides even more intensive academic and/or behavioral support. We may alter the schedule of students to ensure that they have this help. The goal is a successful school experience.

We are happy to have your child here and look forward to a great school year!

Classroom Rules:

1. Follow directions.

2. Raise your hand for permission to speak.

3. Raise your hand for permission to leave your seat.

4. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.

5. Respect others

Classroom Expectations:

1.Arrive to class on time.

2. Do not use electronic devices in class without teacher permission.

3. Come to class prepared. This includes bringing all materials (book, notebook, pencil, etc.) to class with you. If you go to your locker after the bell has rung, you will be tardy.

4. Come to class ready to learn. We may review things you already know, and we will also go over new information. It is important to pay attention at all times!

5. Respect is a big issue with me. I want you to respect me, as well as your classmates. This includes verbal and physical words and actions.

What are the consequences if I don’t follow the rules?

Behavior problems not only prevent me from teaching, but others from learning. When you choose to prevent others from learning, you will be handled in the following way(s):

1st offense-verbal warning

2nd offense-conference after class, consequences depending on the circumstances-PBIS folder signed

3rd offense-parent contact*

**If parent contact cannot be made or the offense is serious enough an office referral will be given.

Updated cell phone policy:

HCMS Cell Phone Policy 2017-18

Students are not to use or possess cell phones or any electronic communication devices during the instructional portions of the day, including passing periods. Electronic devices are to be kept in lockers during this time. Students may use such devices before/after school, during lunch periods, and at extracurricular activities. When a student is found to be in possession of an electronic device that interrupts the instructional environment, the following steps will occur:

1st Violation - Student Warning - Phone returned to student at end of the day

2nd Violation - Assigned one (1) hour Detention

3rd Violation - Assigned one (1) Alternative Placement

4th Violation - Assigned two (2) days Alternative Placement

5th Violation - Assigned one (1) day Out of School Suspension

6th Violation - Assigned three (3) days Out of School Suspension

7th Violation - Assigned five (5) days Out of School Suspension

8th Violation - Assigned ten (10) days Out of School Suspension and recommendation for expulsion

Electronic Device violations are cumulative and disciplinary steps are progressive throughout the school year. The entire electronic device (battery, SIM card, etc.) may be confiscated by the reporting staff member and turned in to the office or administration. Upon a second violation, parents/guardians will be notified and able to pick up the electronic device at the Middle School Office during regular school hours. Any student who refuses to comply with this policy will be considered insubordinate. The school is not responsible for any such items that are lost or stolen.

By bringing these devices on school grounds, students give the school administration consent to access voicemails, text messages, call logs, picture galleries, hard drives, memory cards, etc., to determine ownership (if lost) or when there is reason to believe they contain evidence of a school-rule or law violation.

Sending, sharing, viewing, or possessing pictures, text messages, e-mails, or other material of a sexual nature in electronic or any other form, including the contents of a cell phone or another electronic device will result in suspension and possible expulsion.
