Students will analyze United States literature s it reflects social perspective and historical significance by continuing to use language for expressive, expository, argumentative and literary purposes. The emphasis in this course is critical analysis through reading, writing, speaking, listening and using media

Objectives:

·  Relate the experience of others to their own

·  Research the diversity of the American experience

·  Examine relationships between the past and the present

·  Build increasing sophistication in defining issues and using argument effectively

·  Create products and presentations which maintain standard conventions of written and oral language

(There will be use of various other media and literary forms such as music, documentaries and supporting activities outside of the classroom as it relates to our course of study. There will be parental notification when such when any other media will be used)

Sept./Oct

Review: writing, grammar, sentence structure, parts of speech

A Separate Peace:

This novel is the story of two boys in the 1940’s at boarding school. We will explore issues of inter-relations of teenagers and the consequences when emotions dictate actions. Students will have opportunities to draw parallels between themselves and the text.

November:

Fences:

Set in the 1950’s, this Pulistzer Prize winning play tells the story of Troy who is struggling between in a changing world. Issues of friendship, fatherhood and dreams deferred are prominent themes in this work. We will discuss the social climate of the time such as sports, integration and civil rights.

Dec:

Various Poetry and Short stories by American Authors Incuding:

Langston Hughes, Robert Frost, Sylvia Plath

Assessment:

Classwork: Includes notebook check, Journals and class activities

Projects: Visual or oral presentation

Quizzes and homework

Test

Students are to have a 3 ring binder with subject dividers. All work is to be kept in the binder in an organized fashion for a part of the classwork grade.
