Course Description: English III is a course in American Literature. We will begin our survey of American literature in the 1600s and move as close to contemporary American literature as we possibly can. We will discuss what being an American means and has meant through the writings of American authors. We will see how things such as politics, race, gender, religion, etc. influence writing. We will also identify key literary terms and master key literary concepts as outlined in the state standards for English III. You will be required to read, write, think, listen, and speak in order to do well in this class. In addition to literature, you will have assignments in vocabulary (including stems), grammar, and research, including argumentative research papers that you will write during the duration of the course.

South Carolina ELA Standards & Common Core Standards: This course is designed to correlate with the South Carolina Department of Education ELA Standards and Common Core Standards for 11th grade. These standards can be found at http://ed.sc.gov/agency/offices/cso/standards. Because Anderson District One is using this year as a bridge year in curriculum, we will also be using Common Core Standards for American Literature, found at

My Educational Philosophy

Knowledge is power. When students are able to use that knowledge and think on their own, they have found true success. I believe it is the instructor’s responsibility to help students learn to use higher level thinking skills, including analyzing and critiquing information. In this class, we will study a variety of authors and genres and find meaning within them. Each student has his or her own voice and may find different meanings. Regardless, each student is responsible for his or her success, and that is not just determined by a grade. I will equip my students to be independent learners and thinkers as we move on this journey.
