Section 2: Assessment overview and sample student profile Yrs 11–12

The study area core underpins the study area specification (SAS) and is essential in realising the aims of the course. It is delivered through specific unit choices of the school. Fill in the columns as per the following.

  • Units of work —describe each unit of work outlining the sequence in which the course is taught, showing

–a contextualised approach

–learning experiences from at least two science disciplines

–the practical nature of the unit

–integrated aspects from each of the study area core topics (SAS 3.1).

  • Approximate time — show the time allocated to each unit (20 hours minimum) (SAS 3.1).
  • Course organisers— tick those organisers that are in the unit (a minimum of three within each year of the course) (SAS 3.1.1).
  • Assessment description— categorise the instrument and describe the conditions of assessment, e.g. access to resources, supervised/unsupervised. Include an indication of length and approximate:

–time for supervised written (SAS 4.5.1)

–number of words for written research responses (SAS 4.5.2)

–time for spoken research responses (SAS 4.5.2).

In most cases, year 11 assessment is considered formative, while the summative information is most likely to come from Year 12 assessment.
