Course Description:

This core classis a one credit course that includes a comprehensive study of American literary works, grammar and punctuation, composition with an emphasis on informative and persuasive essays,vocabulary, and notable literary works such as Monster, Rough Waters, Out of the Dust, No Choirboy: Murder, Violence, and Teenagers on Death Row, The Crucible,and Call of the Wild. Added objectives involve Keystone exam preparation and communication skills focused on cooperative learning.

Grading Scale:

Grades are calculated using total points. There is no explicit point total. Below, I have listed a number of the tasks and assessments that will be given point values.

Formaland informal writing assignments

Individual and small group projects

Grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, and literatureclass work and homework

Class discussions

At the beginning of each marking period, all students will begin with 40 free points. As the marking period progresses, students may lose points due to poor behavior or lack of preparation, participation, or effort.

Students must have homework done and ready to be handed in at the beginning of the class period that it is due.

The teacher reserves the right to refuse or deduct points from any and all late or plagiarized work. If you are observed using another’s work for your benefit or lending your work to another, expect your grade to suffer.

Please refer to the Central High School student handbook.

Classroom Expectations:

☺Come to class prepared to learn— you should ALWAYS bring a writing utensil and your binder.

☺Demonstrate respect for yourself, your teacher, your classmates, and school property.

☺Of course, all CHS student handbook procedures do apply.

Food and Drink:

Food and drink are not permitted in class. Please leave your food and drink items in your locker BEFORE you enter the classroom. The only exception is a water bottle or a note of justification from a parent or the school nurse.

Exam Procedure:

When tests and quizzes are administered, complete silence is expected from the time the exam is passed out until the final exam is collected. Failure to follow thisprocedure will result in a loss of points.

Restroom, Locker, and Office Visits:

Please coordinate such visits during study hall or in between classes rather than during class. If you must leave the classroom for any reason, you should sign out and use your CHS student handbook as a hall pass.
