Summer Literacy Assignment

Welcome to tenth grade! We are excited about the year ahead of us and look forward to meeting you in September. Over the summer, you must complete the Summer Literacy Assignment. This work will count towards your first quarter grade. The first two parts of the assignment must be completed. The third part is extra credit. Make sure to leave adequate time and work on this assignment throughout the summer. Leaving all of the work until the last minute will lead to low-quality work and heavy stress.

Part 1: Read five non-fiction articles from different genres and complete a typed article summary for each article.

Step One: Select one non-fiction news article from the following genres for a total of five articles:

o  International News

o  National News

o  Sports

m  Local News

m  Editorial

Step Two: Your articles must come from the following news sources:

o  TIME.corn, Newsweek.com, Lohud.com, Sportsdlustrated.corn, CNN.corn, or Foxnews.corn

Step Three: Answer the following for each article. Your responses must be typed in a size twelve font and double spaced.

A. Title of article, author, and source.

B. In your own words, state the author's thesis/claim/opinion?

Questions a, c, and e ask what type of evidence is being used. Base your answers on the definitions below:

There are three different types of evidence a speaker or writer uses to appeal to his or her audience: 1) logic or facts 2) emotion and/or 3) ethics and morals.

o  Factual: by appealing to an audience's sense of reason and logic, the speaker or writer intends to make the audience think clearly about the sensible and/or obvious answer to a problem

s Emotional: by appealing to the audience's emotions, the speaker or writer can make the audiencefeel

sorrow, shame, sympathy, embarrassment, anger, excitement, and/or fear

s Ethical: the overall appeal of the speaker or writer himself or herself; it is important that this person have impressive credentials, a notable knowledge of the subject, and/or appear to be a likeable and moral

Part Two: Read read Barack Obama and Martin Luther King Jr's Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speeches and for each, identify at least three arguments that Barack Obama and Martin Luther King Jr make during their speeches. Also, identify the support President Obama and Dr. King uses to support their claims.
