In this unit, we have read three literacy narratives by published writers (Sherman Alexie, Malcolm X, and Sandra Cisneros). As you know from your reading, a literacy narrative is an essay in which the author reflects on the history of her or his own development as a reader and a writer.

In the course of writing your literacy narrative, you will

  • research your own literacy development by interviewing at least one person who knows about your early life
  • take notes on what you recall from your childhood about your habits as a reader and writer, and then write your own literacy narrative,
  • compose and revise your narrative, and
  • create an artistic cover or paper frame for your narrative.
