English 1- Root Words Lesson 7

  1. BELL – war

Bellicose (adjective) – warlike, aggressive, quarrelsome

Example: Even though he never won any of the arguments he started, he continued to be belligerent and bellicose.

  1. PAC/PEAS – agree; peace

Appease (verb) – to make peaceful and quiet; to calm, satisfy

Example: Crying children can usually be appeased with a toy.

  1. HOSP/HOST – host; guest

Hostage (Noun) – a person held to ensure a demand is met

Example: Several countries have used military force with varying degrees of success over the last three decades to rescue hostages.

  1. AM/IM – love

Enamored (adjective) – charmed or fascinated; inflamed with love

Example: When Romeo first saw Juliet he was immediately enamored with love.
