Guidelines for

Engineering Physics

Engineering and technology would not exist without physics. Any technology involving energy (heat, light, sound, electromagnetic, mechanical), involves physics! All manufactured items originate in physics-based technology.

In Engineering Physics you will learn about the physics concepts that form the foundation of any mechanical design. To be an engineer, you not only have to be able to come up with the ideas, but you must also understand the physics behind those ideas so that you can design and manufacture a successful product.

Our study of physics theory will focus primarily on motion, forces, energy conservation, and electricity, but may also include fluids and wave energy (sound and light). A more specific list of possible topics is as follows:

We will be usingActive Physicsby Dr. Arthur Eisenkraft (2005) and Glencoe Physics. These will be supplemented with problems from a variety of high school and college level physics textbooks.

In this class you will also learn to express your ideas on paper in a standard format known to engineers around the world. You will learn how to translate your ideas from paper to manufactured objects. The purpose of this portion of the Engineering Physics course is to teach you how to successfully communicate ideas, facilitating the process from idea to design to manufacture. The engineering-specific topics covered are as follows:

Grading Policies:

Your grade will be distributed as follows:

40% tests and quizzes

15% homework

45% projects and labs

Each quarter grade is worth 20% of your overall final year grade, and the cumulative final exam and midterm are each 10% of your yearly grade.

General Policies and Procedures:

  • Be on time and be prepared for class with the appropriate materials. It is REQUIRED that you have a separate 3-ring binder for engineering physicsonly. You will receive handouts, and will be expected to keep all notes, homework, sketches, and lab reports neatly organized and up to date.
  • Homework is due at the beginning of the class period. Late physics homeworkwill not be accepted. All physics homework should be done on loose leaf paper, for easy removal from your binder. All EngPhys projects are due on the assigned date. Late project assignments will be accepted one day after the due date but can receive at most 50% credit. No late work of any kind will be accepted more than one day past the due date.
  • You will receivehomework assignments verbally in class; however you may also check the site for assignments. This site will have an electronic copy of the current syllabus, as well as other items of importance. It will be updated weekly with the new syllabus.
  • Make a written effort on all assignments. Homework is graded on effort and organization as well as accuracy. No credit can be given for a blank space!
  • Selected homework assignments will be graded. Other assignments may simply be checked in class for effort and completion. Unannounced quizzes based on homework assignments may be given at any time.
  • Study and organize your notes each night.
  • We do not give extra credit, so please do not ask.
  • Avoid being absent!! However, if you are legitimately absent, remember that it is YOUR responsibility to ask for missed work. Remember that you can always check the works site to check for homework assignments! Unexcused absences are unacceptable and will be dealt with according to school policy.
  • Learning can only occur if you are present in the classroom. However, it may occasionally be necessary for you to leave the classroom to go to your locker or use the lavatory. Keep such trips to a minimum! Passes will be restricted if necessary.
  • Bacon’s five core values of respect, responsibility, safety, compassion, and achievement will be expected throughout the school year! Therefore, please keep the rules for common courtesy in mind at all times.
  • No student is to use any electrical equipment without initial instruction. Failure to follow proper procedure in the use of that equipment will result in removal from the lab. If you have any doubt as to how to use ANY piece of equipment, it is your responsibility to ask for help from the instructor. ASK FIRST! AVOID ACCIDENTS!!
  • Failure to wear safety equipment when required, or failure to follow laboratory instructions, will result in penalties on your grade and possible removal from the class. Horseplay is never permitted, nor is unauthorized experimentation. Breakage of equipment resulting from improper use results in payment by the student.
  • Please see Mr. Petersen or Mrs. Hopkins as soon as possible if you have questions or concerns. The sooner you seek extra help for a problem, the faster we can get you back on track. We are available for extra help after school. Please plan ahead and let us know in advance if you plan to stay after school for extra help.
