ENG4U1 final exam review #1

Exam date and Time: Wednesday June 22nd, 2016 at 12:00PM

Exam location: Period #2 – Room A210, Period #5 – Room A208

Exam duration: 2 hours (120 minutes)

Exam format: 1 literary essay (5 paragraphs)

  • You will write ONE well-structured, five paragraph essay by incorporating two texts studied this year (Hamlet, The Handmaid’s Tale, and/or The Picture of Dorian Gray) AS WELL AS the sight passage included with the exam in the body of your essay (3 body paragraphs). Please note that the I.S.U. novels are NOT applicable as material for analysis on the final exam!

Steps for completion:

  1. Read the attached article, “Tragedy and the Common Man”.
  1. Consider how the ideas explored in “Tragedy and the Common Man” can relate to concepts, themes, characters, setting, literary style and/or structure, and ideas portrayed in the texts you studied in class this year.
  1. Identify one central assertion found within “Tragedy and the Common Man” that relates to TWO (2) of the course texts you studied this year. The central assertion can be anything you feel relates to your chosen core texts. It could address:
  • Theme
  • Characterization
  • Writing techniques and style
  • Setting
  • A literary focus of your choice
  1. Write a formal, literary essay using details from “Tragedy and the Common Man” and from TWO (2) of the core texts studied in class. Your essay should adhere to the following structure: an introduction with a clearly developed thesis; THREE (3) body paragraphs—one must focus on one of the core texts another must focus on another of the core texts, and another must focus on the article, “Tragedy and the Common Man”; and a conclusion.
  1. In your paragraphs you must make reference to two specific examples from the core texts in the form of accurate paraphrasing (from the core texts) and direct quotations (from “Tragedy and the Common Man”) = 2 points, 2 proofs, 2 analyses per body paragraph.

Helpful reminders:

  1. Arrive early to the exam and be prepared.
  2. You must write your exam in blue or black ink so bring multiple pens with you (just in case one runs out).
  3. No electronic devices are allowed in the exam room (ipods, phones, cameras, etc.).
  4. Read over the exam instructions and the sight passage thoroughly before you begin planning and writing your essay.
  5. Plan your thesis and arguments before you begin writing.
  6. Make sure that you include an explicit thesis statement in your introductory paragraph.
  7. Maintain a formal tone and language throughout your essay.
  8. Spelling and grammar do count towards your exam grade, so write clearly and minimize avoidable errors in your essay. Proofread your exam BEFORE you hand it in so that you can ensure you are submitting your best work.
  9. Bring a dictionary/thesaurus for the final exam to help you understand the sight passage and to improve your word choice.
