ENG 2D – Summative Assignment

ENG 2D - SUMMATIVE ASSIGNMENT

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:

· Novel Selection – Identify your top three choices from the selection offered in class by your teacher. Your teacher will make the final decision about who will study each of the novels.

· Reading - Read your novel during the assigned class time and at home. Make note of the reading dates and deadlines provided by your teacher.

· Literature Circles/Group Discussions – You will have opportunities in class to meet and discuss with the other students who are reading the same novel as you. Note the date and purpose of each of these discussions, which are specified in the “Important Dates” chart.

· Format – Please type your work, double-spaced, in 12-point font. Present it neatly, including a title page and bibliography, in a duotang or folder.

· Assignment Value - This summative assignment is worth 15% of your final mark. This is a great opportunity to raise your mark or keep it high before the exam!

· Due Dates - Each part of this assignment must be submitted/presented on the date specified in the “Important Dates” chart [unless you have a medical note]. Otherwise, a mark of zero will be assigned. As this is a summative assignment, there will be NO extensions.

INDIVIDUAL SECTION: As with all assignments, you should submit your best work.

This means that you should think critically about your novel,

plan your work, and carefully revise and edit your writing.

PART A à INTRODUCTORY RESPONSE:

This reading response should be completed after you have finished reading the first chapter [or introductory section, if your novel is not divided into chapters] and after you have had your first literature circle discussion.

What is established in the first chapter (or introductory section) of the novel with respect to the setting, characters and plot? What is the major conflict? How does this chapter [or intro] engage your attention and make you want to read further?
Length: 1 page double-spaced (250-300 words)

PART B à POST-READING RESPONSES:

These should be completed after you have finished reading the entire novel.

Select two excerpts from the novel that are meaningful to you. For each of these…
a) Provide the excerpt/quotation.
b) Explain the excerpt’s significance in the novel with respect to characterization, imagery, use of literary devices, symbolism, theme and/or a personal connection.
Note: For each of the excerpts, you may address one or two of the elements.
Within your set of two responses, you must address two different elements.
Length: 1 page of analysis for each excerpt. This page does not include the excerpt itself.
Tip: Make note of interesting excerpts that resonate with you while you are reading.

GROUP SECTION: Although you will be working as a group, each student is responsible for his/her own portion of the group presentation and will be marked individually. Nonetheless, your group must work together to produce a presentation that is unified and cohesive. For this reason, you will be given class time to work on your presentation with your group members.

PART C à ORAL PRESENTATION: {15-20 minutes}

While there is no “official” written component for this part of the assignment,

you are asked to hand in point-form notes [or your speaker notes] to summarize your portion of the oral presentation.

1. Introduction -- Each group member must participate in this portion.
Introduce the novel to the class by providing a brief overview of the setting, characters and plot. As a group, decide on a creative way to present this information [i.e., Do not simply read the back of the novel to the class.]
2. Body -- Each group member is responsible for presenting one of the sections.
a) Identify the main theme of the novel and explain how the author conveys this theme to the reader. Show how this theme is applicable to society today by finding and presenting an article [internet or newspaper] OR a video clip [from a television program or movie] that demonstrates this theme. Explain the connection between the novel and the article/video clip.
b) Research a topic or issue that is explored in the novel. Present your findings in an interesting manner [powerpoint, scene, video, etc.]. Explain how the novel deals with the topic/issue.
-- The third group member may do either (c) or (d). For groups with four people, the third group member will do part (c) and the fourth group member will do part (d). --
c) Create a character box that contains six items of relevance to one of the main characters in the novel. Go back to the text to find justification for including each item (a quotation and/or explanation). Explain why you included each item and how it relates to the character’s development, his/her relationship(s) with other characters, and/or the theme of the novel. As much as possible, think creatively and symbolically [rather than literally] when making decisions about what to include in the box. When you reveal and discuss each item with the class, pretend you are that character.
d) Produce a creative piece [sculpture, painting, video, etc.] that conveys a central theme of the novel. Present and explain your creation to the class, using specific references to characters, scenes and/or events in the novel.
ALSO, write and present a monologue in which you pretend you are a character from your novel. Reflect on important aspects of the novel (relationship(s) between characters, themes, issues raised, etc.) The monologue can be video-taped.
3. Conclusion -- Each group member must participate in this portion.
Conclude your presentation by summarizing its elements in an interesting way.
