ENG 1D “The Merchant of Venice” – INVESTIGATING GENOCIDE

Wilson

TASK/PURPOSE: We already know that “The Merchant of Venice” explores aspects of racism towards Jewish people. Unfortunately, racism continues to exist in our society.
In some instances, racism is the cause of deaths. In 1948, (after the Holocaust of World War II), the United Nations created a definition of genocide. Genocide means “committing the following acts committed with the intention of destroying, in whole or in part, a national racial, ethnical, or religious group:

(a)  Killing members of the group;

(b)  Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group

(c)  Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;

(d)  Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;

(e)  Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group

Your task is to work either alone or with 1-2 other people and choose an example of a genocide event from recent world history.

Each topic can be chosen only once (first come, first serve).

TOPICS:

1.  First Nations Treatment in Canada (Reserves, Residential Schools, and the 60s Scoop)

4.  Cambodian Genocide
