Classroom Policies

The classroom environment is crucial to the learning process. Therefore, any disruptive behaviors such as excessive talking, talking back, swearing, arguing, eating, passing notes, answering your cell phone (or leaving the class to answer it), and texting will not be tolerated. Cell phones should be turned off. You are expected to come to class prepared with all our materials and work. You are also expected to respect yourself and others and therefore, conduct yourself responsibly.

Classroom Participation

You are expected to attend all classes. Excessive or repeated absences may affect your success in this class and your grade. Please make sure to arrive on time and be prepared for class. Class begins at 10:05 am and you are expected to attend the entire class. Also, you should notify me if you expect to miss a class to receive an excused absence or if you need to leave class early. It is your responsibility to make up all missed work. Any class handouts will be available on my website: jkriksciun.wordpress.com.

You are expected to participate regularly in class. We will often be working in in-class writing workshops doing text analysis, peer editing or having reading discussions- all activities to develop your writing skills. As a result, you will be graded on your class participation and in-class work, discussions and workshops/peer editing.

**NOTE: Students may be referred to the LearningCenter (on the 4th floor) for additional help. The WritingCenter is an excellent place for students to get extra assistance with their writing, grammar skills and editing. I highly recommend it!

Grading Structures

  • Formal Writing Assignments(5)30%
  • Grammar Quizzes (6)30%
  • Homework (writing, worksheets)20%
  • Mid-term and Final Exam20%

Grading Policy

All work must be submitted according to the established deadlines for each assignment. Students who hand in work late should expect to be penalized with a lower grade. In such cases, penalties will be determined on a case by case basis that takes into account each student’s unique situation.

Assignments

You will receive homework on a weekly (usually twice a week) basis in the form of grammar worksheets or writing assignments. You should expect to review or edit your homework/writing during the following class. Also, you will be given additional readings. You are responsible for quiz and test preparation.

All formal writing assignments should be typed, double spaced and have one inch margins on all sides. First and second drafts must be included with all final formal writing assignments. In-class writing as well as homework writing assignments can be hand-written but the handwriting MUST be legible. Please skip lines to leave room for comments and editing.

Any handouts given in class will be available at my website: jkriksciun.wordpress.com. You can also find any important class updates (class cancellations, assignment/quiz due dates) there. Please check the website regularly.
