Level 2 pathway

Endurance Officials Level 2 Guidance – collection and submission of records of experience

Level 2a (club)

No more than two of the same type of experience should feature. Three differing experiences should be achieved as a minimum;

Endurance pathway 2a / Valid Level 2a experiences
  • Assisting with the setting out a start/finish area pre race
  • Start Line assisting/Assembling Athletes
  • Course Marshalling
  • Marshalling Crossing Points
  • Marshalling at Road Junctions
  • Assisting with the judging/recording at a race finish or equivalent
  • Stewarding/Marshalling at finish or operating a finishing funnel

Level 2b (county or home country equivalent)

Two of the experiences at level 2b must be either from outside of the officials’ home county, or one outside of the official’s home county and the other at a race of over 600 competitors. At least 4 experiences must be in different roles.

Endurance pathway 2b / Valid Level 2b experiences
  • Management of a Sector or Management of a Group of Marshals
  • Marshalling ‘complex’ junctions and/or loops or change overs in relays
  • Managing course set up and marking / signing (in smaller sized races of 1,000 competitors or less)
  • Managing Post Race/Post Finish Services or equivalent role
  • Start/Finish Area Management / Start Director or equivalent role
  • Lap Recording
  • Finish Recording
  • Finish Funnel Management
  • Manual Timekeeping at Off Track events
  • Timekeeper recording
  • Clerk of the Course duties and responsibilities
  • Course Director
  • Race Refereeing or Assistant to Race Referee
  • Line Judging/judging a finish
  • at finish or operating a finishing funnel

Level 2c (region or home country equivalent)

Level 2c experiences are the same as those in the list above for level 2b experiences. Specific conditions of the level 2c experiences include;

Endurance pathway 2c / Valid Level 2c experiences
  • Six should be different from all other experiences gained as part of progression from 2b to 2c.
  • In addition to those already achieved at 2b (county) two of the ten experiences should also be at events outside of official’s home region or home country equivalent at 2c.

The Level 2 Endurance Officiating course

Level 2 is a one day course that will allow the candidate to work under the supervision of a qualified endurance official with a view to becoming a qualified technical official.

Following attendance at this course candidates will have knowledge and understanding in the following areas:

  • Appropriate attire/equipment
  • How endurance officials operate at road and cross country races
  • The requisite skills to be an endurance official
  • The key officials who operate at an endurance event and their responsibilities
  • Knowledge and application of rules
  • Relationship with other officials
  • Relationship with athletes
  • The tools to do the job
  • The endurance officials' pathway – what is in it for me
  • A working knowledge of the start, finish and course of an endurance event

Following completion of the course candidates will then be required to operate under the supervision of a qualified technical official and submit log book records to gain a formal technical officials qualification at the following sub-levels:

  • Club– officials who have attended the L2 course and have 4 recognised experiences at an endurance event in their log book will progress to county official.
  • County– officials will progress to become a county official when they have studied two compulsory modules - Sector Marshals, and Results/ Recording (Laps/Times/Finish) - and one from: Race Referee/Race Judge, Start/Finish Director (Basic), Race Director (Basic), and Clerk of Course/Course Director. They should also show a further 6 successful experiences in their log book.
  • Regional– officials will progress to become regional officials when they have studied the 3 remaining modules from: Race Referee/Race Judge, Start/Finish Director (Basic), Race Director (Basic), and Clerk of Course/Course Director. They should also show a further 10 successful experiences in their log book plus one positive report on their competence .

The Risk Awareness Course for Endurance Officials working though level 2 of the pathway must be completed before making an application for a 2c licence or on completing the race referee module, whichever comes sooner.

  • Length– half day
  • Minimum age– 18 years
  • Cost- £20 per person for L2 and £20 per person for Risk Awareness. If a L2 course and a Risk Awareness course are organised and attended on the same day, the cost is £30 per person.
