Endorsed Carnivals – Club Championships

and State Selection

CARNIVAL REQUIREMENTS

The schedule of major carnivals for a season are listed below.

In individual events, all competitors MUST compete in their own age group. Team competitors must also compete in their own age group except in the circumstances outlined below.

If on the day of a carnival, and subject to the prior approval from Team Management, there are not sufficient members present in a particular age group to make up the required numbers for a team event, a team can be made up utilising a suitably proficient, competent and available competitor from the immediate age group below. In selecting this competitor, all requirements and rules of the SLSA Competition Handbook must be followed.

Example: If at a carnival there are only 3 suitably proficient U14 girls to make up a swim team, a 4th member can be selected from the U13’s if that girl is suitably proficient and willing to compete. The nominated girl will be selected by Team Management in conjunction with a recommendation from the U13 girls Group Leader.

Selection Criteria for State Team

THE STATE TEAM

Competitors will be chosen on the basis of proven ability to compete at a level necessary to be competitive at the State Championships. Group leaders will put forward nominations for ratification by the State Team Selection Committee.

In selecting the State Team, competitors will only be selected in both individual and team events as per the age groups outlined in the CarnivalRequirements section of this booklet. No child will be selected in an age group that does not correspond with their date of birth.

Selection in the State Team will be based primarily on results gained in the ‘Cronulla Crays State Team Selection Series (Selection Series) only’. The State Team Selection Committee will also take into consideration consultation with relevant Group Leaders.

The State Team Selection Series will comprise the following rounds:

  • Round 1: Cronulla Crays Championships Round 1
  • Round 2: Bate Bay 4 Way Carnival
  • Round 3: South Maroubra Carnival
  • Round 4: Cronulla Crays Championships Round 2
  • Round 5: Elouera Junior Carnival – Elouera
  • Round 6: Cronulla Crays Championships Round 3

It is not necessary for children to compete in every round of the Selection Series to be eligible for State Team selection. However, the results of all rounds will be recorded and the Selection Committee will have regard to all results.

It is also emphasised that for selection in the State Team, results will be recorded and noted for all of the 6 rounds of theCronulla Crays State Team Selection Series. For the purposes of selection, all attempts will be made to record results in all rounds of the selection series (including the 3 rounds of the Cronulla Crays Championships) on a 1st to 10th place basis only. The points system that is utilised to decide the 3 rounds of the Cronulla Crays Championships will not be utilised for the purposes of selection.

Withdrawal from the State Team/Sub Teams/Late Withdrawal

The preliminary selection of the State Team will be finalised after Round 4 of Cronulla Crays State Team Selection Series.

When selected in the Cronulla Crays State Team it is expected that all competitors will make themselves available for all sub team selection appropriate to their age group. Cronulla Crays management places much emphasis on team spirit within a strong competitive environment. However, if a competitor selected in the State Team, wishes to limit their role in any subsequent selection for sub teams, within the State Team, they should do so by written application to Team Management.

If a competitor, due to illness or injury, has cause to remove themselves from any sub team, on the day of the competition or approximate to the day of competition, then Cronulla Crays Team Management, in consultation with the Cronulla Crays Executive, may, taking into account the club’s duty of care in relation to the health and welfare of the competitor, remove that competitor from all further individual and teams events at the carnival.

SUB TEAMS – Selection Process

Due to the carnival order of events and layout, it is generally impracticable for competitors to be selected in both surf and beach teams, without the risk of causing disruption to the team and/or the carnival. Accordingly, competitors will generally be chosen in either water sub teams or beach sub teams, but not both.

The sub teams will be finalised, after Round 6 of the Selection Series.

In general the State Team will comprise of the following sub teams per gender in each age group:

  • One swim/wade team ( 4 swimmers per team);
  • Two board relay teams ( 3 board paddlers per team);
  • One sprint relay team ( 4 runners per team); and
  • Three board rescue teams (1 swimmer and 1 board paddler per team).

In the event that a Group Leader wishes for Team Management to enter more than the number of teams outlined above, that Group Leader will be required to make a submission to Team Management, based on relevant results, as to why extra teams should be entered. The final decision to enter extra teams will rest solely with Team Management and selectors in consultation with the Cronulla Crays Executive.
