a. What is truss construction?

Answer: The truss construction design is an assembly of members (supports)

forming a rigid framework and covered by fabric, metal or composite.

b. What is monocoque construction?

Answer: The monocoque construction design involves the construction of a metal shell without internal framework. The reinforcements are vertical rings called formers. This type is also called stressed skin construction.

INTRODUCTION

WHAT: In this lesson you will learn about basic airmanship practices.

WHY: Good airmanship promotes safety. Cadets should be made aware at an early stage that safety is a major factor when flying.

WHERE: You can apply this knowledge when visiting an aerodrome for facilities tour, at an air-show, during glider familiarization, or even while attending summer training.

STAGE 1 AIRMANSHIP

1. Airmanship Definition:

a. Airmanship is skill in the handling and operating of airplanes on the

ground and in the air.

b. Airmanship includes a thorough knowledge of applicable theory, systems, regulations and procedures.

c. Airmanship includes an attitude of preparedness for any events that may occur, including pre-determined plans of action for various emergencies.

d. Four basic practices that contribute to good airmanship are aircraft cleanliness, pre-flight checks, run-ups and maintenance records.

2. Cleanliness:

Airplane cleanliness is a part of airmanship. Dirt disguises defects which

makes them more difficult to detect. Dirt also causes friction with the air.

This extra drag decreases aircraft performance. Clean windows are an

important factor when considering visibility and safety.

3. Pre-flight Check:

Before taking an aircraft for a flight, the pilot does a pre-flight check. This

check or inspection ensures that the aircraft is airworthy. This means that

the aircraft has no damage and is fit for safe flight.

4. Run-up:

Before take-off a run-up is performed. The run-up checks the engine,

instruments and controls.

5. Maintenance Records:

a. This involves understanding of the necessity and care in the execution of keeping an airplane in airworthy condition.

b. Complete maintenance records are maintained on every aircraft. These records document all maintenance, adjustments and alterations, as well as any problems encountered and all additions of fuel and oil. These records enable the pilot to understand the aircraft’s history.
