JUNIOR SCIENTIFIC SPECIALIST

As a JUNIOR SCIENTIFIC SPECIALIST, your main responsibilities are to:

  • Assess cases; determine the type of examinations required and in what order the processes should be carried out
  • Examine samples for the presence of bodily fluids; identify origin of the body fluids and prepare sample submissions for DNA analysis
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of examinations and samples processed
  • Conduct technical reviews of DNA analysis
  • Conduct scientific reviews of paternity reports
  • Provide and prepare Disclosures as well as Will Says for forensic and paternity casework
  • Participate in technological development training
  • Develop proficiency in the knowledge and skills involved in the conversion of new instrumentation and technology
  • Conduct lectures and presentations as required

You are the ideal JUNIOR SCIENTIFIC SPECIALIST, if:

  • You possess an undergraduate B.Sc. in Biology, Chemistry or Forensic Science
  • You have completed related course work, classes and training in the areas of Biochemistry, Genetics, Molecular Biology and Statistics and/or Population Genetics
  • You possess strong verbal and written communication skills
  • You have strong familiarity with MS Office and Excel
  • You have knowledge and experience in the use of specialized instrumentation and techniques used in all procedures relating to item examination, including body fluid identification, and DNA analysis
  • You possess sound knowledge relating to evidence handling procedures to ensure sample continuity and integrity
  • You are knowledgeable of Bloodstain Pattern Analysis, Trace Analysis (hair/fibers), and Fingerprinting
  • You possess sound knowledge of accreditation requirements (SCC, NFSTC) for all procedures in a Forensic Laboratory performing biological examinations and DNA testing
  • You have knowledge of laboratory safety regulations pertaining to the handling of Hazardous Materials such as bodily fluids, toxic, infectious and volatile materials
  • You are proficient in assimilating information from case particulars with observations from item search to render sampling decisions
  • You have excellent observational skills when relating results of item examinations to scenarios regarding possible means of deposition and /or transfer of biological materials
  • You possess strong collaboration skills are necessary to achieve duties within required TATs while maintaining quality standards
  • You possess excellent manual dexterity
  • You are flexible, able to multi-task, and prioritize your workload
  • You are organized, detail oriented with accurate, complete and concise record keeping skills
