JOB PURPOSE

Chief Examiners have responsibility for managing the quality of assessment development including assessment writing, marking and reviewing and for overseeing the external assurance process for their allocated subject area.
Note: Chief Examiner’s (at least one appointed for each subject of English, Mathematics and ICT) will have a background and experience in the delivery and assessment of Functional Skills qualifications.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

Accountabilities:
  • Accountable for maintaining standards of Gateway QualificationsFunctional Skills qualifications.
Responsible for:
  • Standardising the practice of Assessment Markers andExternal Quality Assurers.
  • Monitoring the work ofAssessment Writers and AssessmentReviewers ensuring that assessments are written at the appropriate standard.
  • Maintaining the awarding and setting of standards.
  • Co-ordinating and delivering centre training.
  • Being the point of contact for enquiries relating to assessments.
  • Reviewing the outcomes of data analysis of results.
  • Completion of the annual qualification report and performance of examinations.

Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent qualifications related to the area/ target group/ sector to be quality assured
  • External Quality Assurance award, or working towards this and/or teaching qualifications.

Experience

  • Experience in the delivery of Functional Skills in a specific area.
  • Experienced Internal Quality Assurer
  • Experienced External Quality Assurer (minimum of 3 years)
  • Sound understanding and experience of assessment and QA processes and procedures
  • Recent experience of post 16 education
  • Experience of policies and procedures of Gateway Qualifications and/or other awarding organisations.
