Empathy Project for Township Tuesday February 20, 2018
Hey friends,
First of all, we’d like you all to know that the content of this PowerPoint was created by one of our eight-grade students, Julianna Stone. She and one of her teachers worked hard to create the effects and message included here. Her peers contributed by adding some scenarios for discussion purposes. If you know Julianna, please take a minute to mention this to her.
Now, down to business: We’ve tried to make this as user-friendly and easy as possible.
You do have to click to advance each slide, but each slide will load on its own. There are some delays in timing included, and they’re intentional, so please be patient as each slide loads.
Below are some questions to help with scenario discussions. Please remember, this project has been student driven, so some of the scenarios might not be as deep as they could be, but these are the kinds of things 8th graders think about…
As you discuss the scenarios...
Decide whether or not the person in each situation needs someone to show empathy.
Think about how you WOULD honestly respond.
Then think about how you SHOULD respond if you were showing empathy.
Think about what might be happening in each person’s life that you don’t know about.
Is it possible that this person is homeless but no one knows?
Might this person be living with a parent who has recently lost his or her job?
Might this person be living with a seriously ill parent or sibling?
Might this person suffer from anxiety or depression?
Might this person be visually impaired?
What other things might be going on that we can’t see?
Take a few minutes to roll-play what you might do or say in these situations.
Please be aware of time. We really want you to wrap this session up by watching that video on the last slide. It’s the song again with scenes from various places and events, and it’s heartwarming, to say the least. The final slide is about three and a half minutes long, so if you could make sure you get to it by 8:19, you should be fine.
Thank you for your cooperation with this special Township Tuesday lesson. Julianna Stone and the rest of our contributors are proud of the part they played in bringing this project to life.
