Dear Emergency Oxygen Champion,

Emergency Oxygen Training Resource

The Respiratory Strategic Clinical Network (SCN) held a half day Emergency Oxygen event during March. The aim of the meeting was to address the variance in the current prescribing of Emergency Oxygen across the East of England region.

Attendees unanimously agreed that all staff handling Emergency Oxygen should be appropriately trained. The BTS have developed two e-learning modules; one for hospital staff and one for Ambulance Staff. This free CD resource is designed to complement the information contained in the BTS Emergency Oxygen Guideline.

To support all trusts increase accessibility to this important educational resource the SCN in conjunction with the BTS are distributing the CD to all oxygen champions across the EoE. We are aware that some trusts have already uploaded the CD onto their existing local e-learning platform, apologies for sending you a further copy!

We would like to invite you to upload this module onto your e-learning platform and encourage its use by all health care professionals. Increased understanding of dealing with emergency oxygen prescribing and usage should be reflected in better BTS audit results.

Theenclosed Emergency Oxygen e-learning resourcecovers:

  • Aims of oxygen therapy and when it is appropriate to administer oxygen
  • Prescribing oxygen to 'target ranges' for saturation levels for different groups of patients
  • Monitoring oxygen saturation
  • Stopping oxygen therapy

The resource comprises several chapters, which can be found in the 'module content' menu on the right-hand navigation list on the page. To view each chapter, simply select and click on it. You may view the chapters in any order to complete the entire module. An MCQ assessment is available in the 'module content'.Overall, the modules take approximately 30 minutes to complete.

As an oxygen champion we will be contacting you in the future to provide us with a brief evaluation of the number and designation of staff that have completed the oxygen module.

Thank you for your continued support and enthusiasm

Yours sincerely,

Linda Pearce
