Information Sheet Emergency Short-term Loan 2012/13

The University of Boltonmay be able to help you with a small, short-term emergency loan. The loan can only be offered to students awaiting a delayed payment from the Student Loans Company (SLC) and will not be available as a bridging loan between loan instalments or whilst you wait for funds to clear to your account following the University confirming your attendance on your course of study if you have simply run out of funds!

Current funds in bank (including any authorised overdraft) must be utilised first.

Eligibility

To be eligible for an emergency loan you must:

Be a ‘home’ student

Have submitted a PR1 / PN1 or completed on application for funding with Student Finance England (SFE)

Have no access to any other funds

Loans will only be issued to students who meet all the above criteria and are waiting for a payment from the SLC.

Loans will be assessed on an individual need basis and must be repaid within the timescale agreed with the advisor. Continuing students who have previously defaulted on an emergency loan paid in a previous year, may have this application rejected or the amount paid now and in future years, restricted.

Required Documentation

At your appointment with the Advisor you must provide the following documentation:

Evidence that you have submitted and application to SFE

Your most recent bank statement and mini statement to show the current balance and any overdraft facility

Evidence of essential costs i.e. rent, travel & childcare if applicable

Students who arrive at an appointment without any of the documentation listed above will not be able to see the advisor; they will have to make a new appointment at a time when the documentation will be available.

Payments

The student will be required to repay the loan within 6 weeks to The University of Bolton.

This is an interest free loan amount to be agreed by advisor (Maximum of £250 for Single Students and £400 for Students with dependents); the amount of loan is dependant on your individual circumstances and must be repaid within 6 weeks.

You may apply for an Emergency Loan if:

  • You are a late applicant to The University of Bolton or your application to SFE was submitted late, or
  • You are a continuing student with a change of circumstances

The Emergency Loan is only available from the Advice Unit in the Students’ Union, or the Student Funding Advisor in the Student Centre. In order to qualify for a loan you must have:

  • Applied to SFE and received your financial notification, or
  • You have received a payment schedule letter from the Student Loans Company or,
  • You have submitted funding application to SFE

Your loan must be repaid within 6 weeks. A student who does not repay the loan will be in breach of University Regulations, may have academic results withheld, excluded from classes, and be prevented from re-enrolling.

ii) I am settled* within the United Kingdom (UK) (i.e. I have the Right of Abode in the

prior to the first day of the first academic year of my course, or
vii) I am the child of a Swiss national, or
viii) I am the child of a Turkish worker.
* Settled – on the first day of the first academic year of your course
Section B
I was ordinarily resident** in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland on the first day of the first academic year of the course, and
I fall under either (i), (ii),(iv) or (vi) above and I have been ordinarily resident in the UK and
Islands for the 3 years immediately before the first day of the first academic year of my
course***, or
I fall under (iii) above, or
I fall under (v) or (vii) above and I have been ordinarily resident in the EEA and
Switzerland for the 3 years immediately before the first day of the first academic year of
my course, or
I fall under (viii) above and I have been ordinarily resident in the EEA, Switzerland and
Turkey for the 3 years immediately before the first day of the first academic year of my
course.
**’Ordinarily resident’ is interpreted to mean habitual and normal residence from choice and for a
settled purpose throughout the prescribed period, apart from temporary or occasional absences.
Such residence must also be lawful – that is, not in breach of any leave to remain in the UK.
(Persons awarded refugee status or humanitarian protection must have been ordinarily resident in
the UK from the date this status was granted.)
***None of this time was wholly or mainly for the purpose of receiving full-time education, or if it was,I was resident in the EEA immediately prior to this three-year period.
