Dear Sir/Madam:

I write to express my concern for the welfare of animals used during the development and manufacturing of Avecia’s biotechnology based medicines. I am dismayed to learn about your company’s affiliation with Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS), a contract research laboratory cited for multiple violations of the U.S. Animal Welfare Act.
Huntingdon's record includes the arrest of workers on animal cruelty charges, 520 breaches of Good Laboratory Practice in England, and a $50,000 payoff to the U.S. Agriculture Department for falsified records and animal welfare infractions.
I respectfully ask you to join the long list of suppliers, financiers and customers* who made the morally responsible decision to sever ties with HLS. If Avecia Biotechnology no longer deals with HLS in any capacity, please let me know so I may share the good news with others.
I was shocked to read eyewitness accounts about HLS technicians who nonchalantly kill dogs by flooding their lungs with toxic materials meant for the animals' stomachs. In one investigative video clip, a technician punches a 4-month-old beagle in the face. During a supposedly post-mortem dissection, another tech slices into the chest of a convulsing monkey.
A former HLS employee who worked in the East Millstone lab stated: "I saw monkeys hunched over in pain after abdominal surgery. One of the employees doing the surgery told me that she had 'no idea what [she] was doing.'"
As recently as 2003, Huntingdon gassed beagles and mice to reanalyze materials HCFC 22 and HCFC 32 on behalf of two Japanese clients. HCFC 22, already prohibited in many countries, will soon be phased out worldwide. Still, HLS forced healthy animals to endure invasive testing for five
months, before killing them all.
I am haunted by the cruelty exposed in five HLS investigations. That is why I have taken the time to highlight these disturbing images and appeal to your sense of ethics.
I also encourage Avecia to replace animal experimentation with progressive non-animal modalities that have proven more relevant to humans. “Currently nine out of ten experimental drugs fail in clinical studies because we cannot accurately predict how they will behave in people based on animal studies," says Mike Leavitt, U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services.

Many facilities worldwide now conduct human-focused research such as in vitro analysis, cell imaging, epidemiology, computer simulators, videos and mathematical modeling, genetic and protein analysis, human brain mapping technologies, autopsy/biopsy studies, MRI imaging, etc.
While you may not agree that non-animal modes should replace misleading animal tests, why risk credibility by association with HLS? I urge you to issue a straightforward statement that conveys your refusal to interact with Huntingdon Life Sciences.
Thank-you,
