COOPERTIVE EDUCATION RULES & POLICIES:

State Department of Education- A student will not be allowed to leave school for participation in a Co-op education program if the student is deficient on any section of the high school graduation exam or is deficient in any required courses.

  1. Student is required to work a minimum of 140 hours per credit to receive credit for the Co-op/ work experience. To earn multiple credits in Co-op, you must be registered for two or more courses of Cooperative Education and must meet the minimum hours for each credit earned. Student will document his/her hours worked and income received on an earnings Report, and submit report with pay stubs to the Co-op teacher the first Monday of each month. An hourly wage and earnings record will be recorded each week at the seminar class.
  1. Student is responsible for his/her own transportation to and from school and work. Transportation problems do not justify absences from school or work.
  1. The Co-op teacher must approve the student’s Co-op job. It is the responsibility of the student to remain employed throughout school year.
  1. Student is placed on the job to train and is under the supervision of both the Co-op teacher and the supervisor where they are employed.
  1. The student may not hold more than one Co-op job without the consent and agreement of the Co-op teacher.
  1. The student’s primary responsibility is to school activities. Passing grades are required in all courses. Please show Progress Reports and Report Cards to Co-op teacher immediately upon receipt. A student who has a failing grade(s) at the end of the first semester will not be allowed to Co-op 2nd semester.
  1. Absence from school means absence from work. A student may not (without the permission of the Co-op teacher) report to his/her job when absent from school. Official school excused absence slip must be shown to Co-op teacher. Excessive absences from school may result in probation/ deletion from the Co-op program (no credit)
  1. Student suspended or assigned to ECAP will be placed on probation and lose OJT privileges during the suspension or ECAP. A second suspension or ECAP assignment will result in student being dropped from the Co-op program (no credit).
  1. Child Labor Law: 16 or 17 year olds enrolled in school may not work before 5 a.m. or after 10 p.m. on any night preceding a school day (Sunday through Thursday night). Weekend hours, including Friday and Saturday nights, and holidays are at the students and parents discretion.
  1. Student should leave campus with in ten minutes following dismissal from his /her last class or instructional time. If for any reason a student needs to remain on campus, permission must be obtained from the Co-op teacher or principal.
  1. If a problem occurs on the job, the student is responsible for contacting the Co-op teacher. The Co-op teacher will investigate the problem and meet with the student and employer to recommend a possible solution.
  1. Parents should understand the student’s responsibility to the Co-op employer and not interfere with the student’s performance of duties (no phone calls or visits). If a work related problem arises, a parent should contact the Co-op teacher and not the employer.
  1. If students become unemployed as the results of situations or conditions beyond their control, students may be assigned in-school simulated work experience during the period of unemployment.
  1. Student should not quit his /her Co-op job or transfer to another job without the consent of the Co-op teacher. Students changing jobs without prior permission from the Co-op teacher is subject to being dropped from the Co-op program (no credit).
  1. Student should notify Co-op teacher immediately if he/she loses a job. If the student gets fired or loses a job due to dishonesty, disrespect, display of temper, violence or any other action deemed unacceptable by the teacher or principal, he/she will be dropped from the Co-op program (no credit).
  1. Student must abide by all school rules and regulations and consider themselves under the jurisdiction of the school while in attendance at his/her Co-op job. The student also agrees to follow the employer’s policies, rule and regulations while on the job.
  1. All safety regulations must be followed at the job site.
  1. The student should be available for work at the times scheduled by the employer. Please plan in advance and obtain employer’s approval for holidays, family trips, Friday night football games, Spring Break, etc.
  1. Absence from work is permitted only for illness, emergency situations, or prior approval from employer. Prior notice to the employer that you are too sick to work is required.
  1. Student is expected to follow the employer’s dress code and to be neat and well groomed at all times. Always present yourself as courteous, friendly, respectful, and trustworthy in all situations.
  1. Student must not discuss confidential information relating to the employer or customers.
  1. Co-op seminar is required once a week for students who participate in co-op program. This is a one-hour seminar, one day a week, set at the agreement of the Co-op instructor and student. Students are REQUIRED to sign in once per week and complete time sheet WEEKLY.
  1. The student organization is an integral part of a student’s career/technical education program. All Co-op students are expected to participate in and actively support DECA, the student organization for Marketing Education/Co-op. DECA membership fees are required.
  1. If you have any concerns about your Co-op job, school, etc., please talk with the Coordinated Studies instructor. Parents/guardians may contact your child’s Coordinated Studies instructor at the student home school.
