Course Description
English 12 provides a survey of British Literature from 449 to the present. The text used is Holt McDougal Literature: Grade 12 Common Core Edition.Included in the semester are selection quizzes, outside reading assignments, essay writing, oral presentations, group projects, and a research paper.Basic writing skills as well as a solid foundation in English grammar and mechanics are considered pre-requisites for this course. Academic misconduct and attendance policies of the school will be followed in this course.
Goals:
- Enhance academic writing skills
- Enhance research skills
- Develop reading comprehension, interpretation, and analysis skills using British literary genres
- Develop oral communication skills and apply them in a variety of contexts
- Develop effective time management skills, study habits, test taking strategies, and collaboration practices

Grading Procedures:
Announced tests, essays, and projects will constitute 60% of your overall average. Quiz and daily grades will count 40%.
Classroom Rules and Guidelines:
The one rule / guideline for this class that will ensure the success and enjoyment of your experience, as well as the experience of your classmates, is to be respectful. Respect yourself, your classmates, and your teacher enough to act in an appropriate and mature manner. In addition, students are expected to follow and abide by all rules and regulations provided in the Enterprise High School Student / Parent Guide.
If a student behaves in an inappropriate or directly disrespectful manner, the teacher reserves the right to issue an immediate office referral.
Class Guidelines:
- Come to class prepared: bring all required supplies and due assignments.
- Be attentive to class lecture, discussions, and presentations. Do not speak while others are addressing the class. Also, if caught sleeping, student will be asked to stand for the remainder of class.
- Stay on task and complete all assignments. You are to complete English work in English class, you are not to work on assignments for another class during English, unless you obtain permission from me.
- Each student is allowed three bathroom passes per nine weeks / semester. Once you have used your three passes, I will mark you tardy for each additional time you go to the bathroom.

Student Work Requirements
Work should be neat and readable. If I cannot read it, I cannot grade it. All directions (written and oral) must be followed.
Late Work:
All assignments must be turned in on the assigned date. No late work will be accepted on daily assignments.Late formal assignments (papers / projects) will be penalized 10% of the total grade each day the assignment is late. All formal assignments are due within the first 15 minutes of class. After the first 15 minutes of class have passed, your assignment is considered late.
Make-up Work
Make-up work is the student’s responsibility. If you are absent, the assignment, whether it be daily work or formal assignments (paper / project), must be turned in on the day you return. If it is a planned absence, formal assignments must be turned in by the assigned date or earlier. All other make-up work must be turned in within three days; if you fail to do so, you will receive a grade of zero. I will give make-up tests during flex block. **** All announced quizzes or tests will be taken the day a student returns. For example, if a student is absent the day before a weekly vocabulary quiz or announced test, that student is still required to take the test since he/she knew about the test in advance.
Cheating
Cheating and / or plagiarism will result in a grade of zero. No exceptions.

Criteria for Papers
Papers will be typed in black ink. If you do not have access to a computer outside of school, you may make an appointment with me to use the student computer in the library during flex block.
Typed papers will be double spaced with 1” margins on all four sides. The font will be Times New Roman with
12 pt. font size.
All papers will follow MLA format. No title page is necessary. On the first page you should begin at the left-hand margin on the first line with your name, next line should be my name – Mrs. Thornton, next line should be the class (block), and the fourth line should be the date. Then you should place the title of your paper centered on the next line. All of this information should be double spaced just like the rest of your paper. All papers must have headers (on every page) which consist of your last name and the page number. These headers should be at the top right corner of every page.

*All final copies of papers must be submitted in both paper and electronic form before the essay is graded. Any paper not submitted electronically will receive a grade of zero.
**Papers will be graded based upon a grading rubric developed by the English department of Enterprise High School.
***Plagiarism will result in a grade of zero. Plagiarism includes failure to document correctly or to account for any information used in an assignment that does not belong to the author of the assignment, incorrect documentation, and / or an incorrect works cited page.
