Description: The third in a sequence of clinical and field experiences. Students will spend 30-60 hours observing and teaching in the public schools. The portfolio and admission process is explained. May be taken two different semesters. Prerequisite: Must be taking EDEL 443, EDEL 453, EDRL 442, and/or EDRL 443.

Students must pass the Regional Policy Check and FBI Fingerprint Check required by the state of Nevada (should have been completed during EDEL.EDSC 311). After receiving results from Student Services, secure a GBC photo ID to wear during each school visit.

Method of Instruction: Combination of in class lecture/presentation and Field Experience

*In class discussion {Sept. 14-5:30-6:45; Oct. 12 – 5:30-6:45; Nov. 16-5:30-6:45; Dec. 7-5:30-6:45}

*Field experience under cooperating teacher 30 hrs. Per credit.

*3 lessons taught *Cooperating teacher permission/ may be whole class or small group

*Portfolio Artifact presentation

*Reflection paper of one of the lessons taught: 1 page - due November 30, 2016

Attend Portfolio Celebration on Monday December 12 – 4:00-5:15 ***highly recommended – broadcast at all cites – presenters Elko and Winnemucca

Late Work: ALL assignments are due on the date given at the beginning of class. Late work will not be accepted.

Attendance: You are expected to attend all classes, the GBC Catalog policy will be followed.

Policy of Academic Integrity: Academic honesty is expected in this course. All student work must be original and authentic. Any acts of cheating, copying, and/or plagiarizing are violations of the Nevada System’s code of conduct and will be taken seriously. Students who cheat by any means will fail the course.

Faculty Senate definition of Plagiarism:

“Plagiarism is presenting someone else’s word, ideas or data as one’s own. When a student submits work that includes the words, ideas, or data of others, the source of that information must be acknowledged through complete, accurate, and specific references; and if verbatim statements are included, through quotation marks as well. In academically honest writing or speaking, the students will acknowledge the source whenever:

*Another person’s actual words are quoted

*Another person’s idea, opinion or theory is used, even if it is completely paraphrased in the student’s own words

*Facts, statistics, or other illustrative materials are borrowed, unless the information is common knowledge.”

Recycling one’s own work from another class is also considered plagiarism.

*Withdrawal form a Course: Students, if they choose to withdraw, need to drop a course before 60% of the course has elapsed. If they do not, there will be no “W” grade option at the end of the semester and students will be assigned an “F”. Faculty will not be allowed to assign a grade of W.

Grading Criteria

This course is a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) only grade.

The unit must be completed/teach lesson/share artifact

The classes must be attended

There must be a satisfactory evaluation from the cooperating teacher

*If all course requirements are completed, but an unsatisfactory evaluation is given by the cooperating teacher, the practicum is unsatisfactory.

*If there is an unexcused absence in the field classroom, the grade will be unsatisfactory for the course.

High expectations in the use of grammar, explanation of thought, and neatness are expected. Always double check the rubric to make sure that all components are complete.
