PEANUT FREE SCHOOL
Currently Lawnton has students that have “severe peanut allergies”. In an effort to ensure the safety and well being of these students, we ask that food products that contain peanuts, peanut butter or peanut oil not be sent to school for classroom parties, birthday treats or snacks to share.
Thanks for your support / Principal’s Message
Dear Lawnton Families,
It’s once again time to start another school year! We are very excited to welcome new staff to our building, provide new learning opportunities, and work together for the success of our students.
Please welcome Mrs. Heidi Estep to first grade. She has been transferred from Linglestown Elementary. Mr. Timothy Pope, our new fifth grade teacher, comes to us from North Side Elementary. Mrs. Linda Hoover joins us as our gifted support teacher, and Dr. Robyn Chotiner has been hired as our new school psychologist. Mrs. Pat Bruno, Mrs. Mary Foster, Mrs. Sally Keller, and Mrs. Sharon Buehler have all retired and we thank them for their years of service and wish them well. Other staff changes will be announced as they happen.
As you may have noticed, the newsletter heading “Behind the Scenes” is different. It coordinates with this year’s school-wide theme “HOLLYWOOD-Setting the Stage for Success!” Look for this theme throughout the school year.
Whether you and your child are new to Lawnton or whether you’ve been here for many years, we welcome each and every one of you and we look forward to starting a new school year together. I am proud to work with an extremely dedicated Lawnton staff and assure you that we all place your children’s best interest first!
We look forward to seeing you at our Back to School Night on Wednesday, September 5th, from 6:30-7:30 PM. This is a chance for you to meet your child’s teacher and learn about the classroom procedures. This night is for adults only please.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to call (558-9430) or email () me.
Sincerely,
Stephanie Bruno

Back to School Night Basics (Scholastic Inc, 2011)
Take advantage of this opportunity to see the world your child inhabits every day and meet the people in charge. It's one of the best ways to begin to build that all-important home-school connection.
·  What to Expect
Who: You'll be able to meet your child's teachers, the principal, nurse, and other staff members, and of course your fellow parents. This is an adults-only night, so book a sitter.
Where: The evening begins with an introduction in the cafeteria. Then you'll separate into groups and spend some time with your child's teacher.
What: The event gives you a glimpse of your child's daily life at school and an opportunity to learn about the curriculum. You can also sign up to join the PTO.
Why: Research shows that parent involvement in schools helps students achieve more and schools thrive. And joining the PTO is a great way to have a voice in school issues and decisions.
·  Visiting the Classroom
/ UPCOMING EVENTS:
9/17 PTO Meeting @ 6:30 PM
Please visit the Lawnton website for PTO minutes.
NEXT MEETING: October 1, 2012 @ 6:30 PM
Many teachers will have you sit in your child's seat. It makes it easier for them to keep track of which child goes with which parent — especially since a parent may not share the same last name as his/her child. Plus, you get the opportunity to see the world of the classroom as your child does every day.
Once you've gathered, your child's teacher will introduce him/herself and give an overview of students' daily routines, schedules, goals, and activities. He/she will also discuss his/her homework policy, discipline plan, and any other important information such as if he/she maintains a classroom home page and how to contact him/her.
At each point, your child's teacher will likely stop and take any questions you have about the world of the classroom. Now's your chance to ask general questions and to clarify anything you find confusing. However, this is not a time to discuss your child's individual needs or progress — save that for parent/teacher conferences when the teacher knows your child better and can talk with you one-on-one.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!
Arrival - If you will be dropping your child off in the morning, please drop off at the entrance of the parking lot where the sidewalk meets the driveway. There will be supervisionin this area. Drop off time is between 8:45 and 9:00. Any student entering the building after 9:00 will be marked tardy.
If there are no buses parked in the front of the school, you may drop off there. Please do not park in this area, as buses arrive at different times throughout the morning, afternoon and school day.
Dismissal - Students who are car riders will report to the gymnasium, instead of the cafeteria,at3:40 where they will be supervised by staff members. Parents will drive into the parking lot and form a line of cars (cones will be displayed and you will be guided the first few days of school). Supervising teachers will cross reference assigned pick-up numbers on approaching cars to the list of students, and then call childrensafely to the pick-up area. Each student will receive 4 "official" Lawnton cards with his/her number. Anyone who picks up your child must displaya card in his/her passenger side window. Please inform all those who may be picking up your child.
·  For the safety of your children, only cars with officialLawnton car pick-up cards will be allowed to pick up children. If you do not have your assigned pick-up number on the school issued card you will be asked to sign-in in the office to pick up your child.
·  It is recommended that each child place one number card in his/her book bag, to use until the number is remembered. If your child is not available when you arrive at the car pick-up area you may be asked to park or drive around again. This helps prevent excessive delays while teachers relocate children to the right place.
·  As always, a note is to be provided if yourchild will be a car rider. If no note is provided, yourchild will be placed on his/her assigned bus. If your child will be a car rider all year, one note stating this is sufficient.
While waiting in line:
·  Please remain in your vehicle as you will need to move up frequently.
·  Please pull up as far as you canand close to the car in front of you.
