PRAYER PARTNERS INVITE YOU TO PRAY

Each week the Prayer Partners invite you to pray with us for a specific concern. This is Mother’s Day and of course we pray God’s blessings for all mothers. But let’s also remember the women for whom Mother’s Day is difficult. Pray for those mothers who are single and struggling. Pray for mothers who are estranged from their children. And finally, pray for those women who have been unable to bear the children that they so desperately want.

MUSIC NOTE

The TUNE EARTH AND ALL STARS, a well-known melody in Lutheran circles, was written by David N. Johnson (1922-1987). When one thinks of this tune, the first hymn to come to mind is ELW 731.Nevertheless, there are other possibilities: A couple of decades after Herbert Brokering (1926-2009) wrote the text of ELW 731 (in 1964), he wrote a set of lyrics that brought together the themes and images of Easter. This project was done at the behest of the editors of the 1991 hymnal supplement With One Voice (a.k.a. WOV or the blue hymnal). Our Hymn of the Day, Alleluia! Jesus Is Risen (ELW 377), does this beautifully, albeit in a stream-of-consciousness manner. In it, we have trumpets, light, splendor, the Emmaus road.We also have the Lamb; the opening of eyes, the breaking of the bread. Particularly relevant for today, we have the vine and branches, joy, the city of God, saints, angels. In short, we have the whole of creation tumbling out, in what Paul Westermeyer calls, “an eschatological alleluia.” To which we can only respond: Amen!
