Meeting Notes

October 19, 2010

Present: Martha Aaron, Beverly Anthony, Maryann Cohan, Darling Garcia, LauraLee Garinger, Karen Hell, Veronica Mendoza, Roberto Pandolfi, Maricela Vital

A scheduled meeting of the Community Advancement Division Council convened at 1:30 p.m. in the Business Training Center, Room 2.

Review of Minutes from September 10th meeting

Minutes approved as written.

Department Updates

Center for Applied Competitive Technologies – Darling Garcia:

1)  Starting second round of Certified Quality Engineering (CQE) training at the ECC Business Training Center on Saturdays beginning November 6th.

2)  Participating in Industry and Technology’s advisory board meeting on November 11th.

3)  Organizing a fasteners instructor training at Compton. The next Fasteners & Machine Tool Technology course will start in February 2011. This is a non-credit course and an Economic Workforce Development (EWD) certificate of completion will be issued to the students.

4)  Will resubmit the Industry Driven Regional Collaborative.

5)  Preparing to travel to Washington in December for the National Science Foundation (NSF) Conference for grant Principal Investigators.

6)  Ron Way is continuing to conduct outreach activities for Project Lead the Way.

Alicia Zambrano - CTE:

September Activities for the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Collaborative:

1)  CAMS Project (California Math and Science High School Academy) registered 350 students for the Fall Semester Project Lead the Way/Engineering program.

2)  Robotics Class at Compton Center registered 15 students for the robotics class (MTEC 70, Basic Robotics). Participating students come from various high schools such as Compton, Dominguez and Lynwood.

3)  Outreach presentation related to our CTE Exploration Program and Aerospace Manufacturing was given at local high schools including King Drew, Long Beach Jordan, Compton, Chavez and Firebaugh.

4)  Participated in various college and career fairs with our local high schools.

5)  Participated in the Long Beach Corps Industry Council Meeting.

6)  Participated in Counselor’s Info Sessions at Vista High School providing information to counselors, teachers and administrators about our CTE programs.

Karen Hess – Tech Prep:

7)  Financial Sense to White Picket Fence class took place on October 16th. It was a huge success. The tape will be available on the Tech Prep website.

8)  November 2nd will be the Palos Verdes Peninsula Unified School District’s Advisory: Photography, Graphic Arts, Video, Machine Tool Technology, Engineering, Architecture.

9)  The X, Y Boom conference featuring Jason Dorsey will be held in the Haag Recital Hall on November 5th from 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. This conference is for middle/high school and college counselors and teachers. It will concentrate on technology in education across three generations.

10) Special Populations Conference will take place November 29 – December 1st.

11) SB70 Middle School Collaborative – Proceeding with Project Lead the Way at El Segundo Middle School with implementation of a career pathway in Engineering. Met with Janice Hickey and Chevron representative, Jim Garza, to pick the teacher and plan training.

12) Women in Industry (WIT) is back. National Institute for Women in Trades, Technology and Science (IWITTS) ATE grant is finished. Currently working on another grant.

Center International Trade Development – Darling Garcia:

1)  The Green Export Enabler Program (GEEP) has a total of 29 companies signed up to attend the Hong Kong ECO-Asia event taking place November 3rd-6th.

2)  Continuing to support high school outreach for international programs.

3)  Coordinating teacher training for the International Business Practice Firm (IBPF) curriculum for Barstow High School.

4)  Pursuing various grant opportunities.

5)  Continuing to conduct international trade orientations and client consulting.

6)  Continuing to produce Best Market Reports. Currently have eight interns working on this project.

Community Education – Veronica Mendoza:

1)  Winter /Spring 2011 catalog in 2nd stage development. In-home date scheduled for 11/22/10.

2)  Production and implementation stage for upcoming Winter/Spring 2011 Community Education events:

a.  Mother-Daughter Tea: Dining room/Alondra room, Saturday, May 7th from 10:00am-12:30pm. Manicures/Pedicures or Up-dos/Make-up provided by Cosmetology Department. $25 p/p.

b.  Pentagon Papers - 40th Anniversary: Film screening & expert panel discussion. Haag Recital Hall, Thursday, April 7, 2011, 6:30pm. $10 p/p.

c.  Pentagon Papers – 40th Anniversary: Museum Excursion – Nixon Presidential Library and Museum. Chartered coach, behind-the-scenes-tour and gourmet box lunch. Saturday, May 14, 2011, 10:30am-3:30pm. $55 p/p.

3)  Kid’s College 2011 dates set for June 27-August 5, 2011.

4)  Top Professional Development Classes Status: Info nights/orientations for Pharmacy Technician, Clinical Medical Assistant and Personal Fitness Trainer training programs took top place in September with healthy attendance (30-70 students per orientation). Current enrollment levels: Pharmacy Technician Training Program = 13. Clinical Medical Assistant Training Program = 6, Personal Fitness Trainer Certification = 5.

Contract Education – Maricela Vital:

The new director, Eldon Davidson, is developing marketing materials for ETP and Green ETP programs. He is also overseeing the revamping of our website. He has been actively visiting local customers to establish business relationship.

Employment Training Panel (ETP)

1)  ETP contract ET09-0240 concluded July 19th. ETP conducted an on-site monitor visit on October 11th and there do not seem to be any issues.

2)  Eldon Davidson and Deborah Imonti will attend an ETP Planning Meeting in Sacramento on October 29th to find out how the approximately $52.4 million appropriation will be allocated for the next two-year ETP contract.

Contract Education

3)  City of Torrance Customer Service Academy is currently on their sixth training session (four cohorts). The fifth cohort is for the Fire Department.

4)  Employees from a local company attended a 40-hour Frontline Leadership class.

Small Business Development Center – Star Van Buren:

a.  Star Van Buren received the Visionary Award from the National Association of Minority Contractors of Southern California in support of their organization.

b.  SBDC will participate in the Torrance/South Bay Career Fair on November 4th at the Toyota Meeting Hall at the Torrance Cultural Center.

c.  The Great Southern California Shake Out will be held October 21st at the Business Training Center.

d.  SBDC will be receiving more funds for the year which will enable it to increase hours of one advisor and bring in another advisor.

e.  The Lead Center wants goals set to be reached. Processes will be improved. Assessment form for clients will be used to help figure out what they need.

f.  A 12-week Youth Entrepreneurial Program (YEP) will be held at the Boys and Girls Club in Compton (through Federal funding earmarked from the Department of Justice). It is for at-risk youth. The Boys and Girls Club will do the recruitment. It will have a Leadership Development component (rope course). As a group, the participants will decide what kind of business they want to do. SBDC will oversee the program and provide marketing materials.

g.  Doing pilot program for the Harbor Truckers Association on how to do business.

h.  New idea for training is a half-day workshop to develop a commercial for You-Tube.

Workplace Learning Resource Center:

Roberto Pandolfi:

1)  Will be conducting ETP training at Weber Metals in November.

2)  AutoCAD, Welding, Parenting and Solar classes will start at the Terminal Island Prison in January 2011.

3)  A Parenting class will start at the Metropolitan Detention Center in December.

4)  Standards for Training Certification and Watch keeping (STCW) class is scheduled for October 26th.

5)  The Coast Guard annual administrative visit will take place in November.


Beverly Anthony:

6)  Have a new contract with Occupational Therapy Training Program (OTTP) to provide computer training to foster youth starting in October.

7)  South Bay Center for Counseling is providing funds for 8 students to receive computer training.

Discussion

o  State Budget: We have a State budget. Community Colleges are okay.

o  Economic Workforce Development funds: $25 million augmentation funds were vetoed.

o  Phishing Scam: El Camino will never ask you to click on a link in an e-mail to change your password. Using CTRL/ALT/DEL on your computer allows you to change your password.

o  Out of State Travel: All out of state travel will be denied unless it is critical to your job. Justification is needed to show the travel is tied to a grant or your job.

o  Department of Labor Sectors Act: $2 billion in grants over the next two years to provide training to individuals.
