Social Justice Studies Scholarship

The Social Justice Studies(SJS) Scholarship is awarded annually to up to seven students majoring in Social Justice Studies at Eastern Kentucky University. The SJS Scholarship is designed to promote, strengthen and diversify the Social Justice Studies program in the School of Justice Studies by attracting excellent students committed to study and engagement. The program offers an interdisciplinary examination of the historical and current dynamics of inequality, oppression, injustice and social change, fulfilling the School’s objectives to create critical and creative thinkers, versed in theories and principles of justice, and committed to engagement in the world.

The SJS Scholarship is available to all incoming first year students, as well as current EKU and transfer students. The SJS Scholarship will be awarded annually and is renewable for one additional year provided the recipient continues to meet all of the eligibility requirements established for this scholarship. Maximum award is 4 semesters (2 years) per student, for each student who is selected to receive the SJS Scholarship. Scholarship will be re-evaluated after two years to determine if it is feasible to continue to award this scholarship. The SJS Scholarship is contingent upon available funding

To be considered for this scholarship, students must meet the following minimum requirements:

Incoming First Year Students

  • Must submit a completed application for the SJS Scholarship (including 3 essays)
  • Must submit a copy of high school transcripts
  • Must submit a copy of ACT/SAT scores
  • Minimum high school overall GPA of 3.0 with ACT composite score of 20 or higher (or 950 SAT math and verbal combined score).I

Transfer students

  • Must submit completed application for the SJS Scholarship (including 3 essays)
  • Must submit a copy of college transcripts
  • Must be enrolled as a full time undergraduate student at EKU
  • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0

Current EKU students

  • Must submit completed application for the SJS Scholarship (including 3 essays)
  • Must submit a copy of EKU transcripts
  • Must be enrolled as a full time undergraduate student at EKU
  • Must be a Social Justice Studies major
  • Must have an overall GPA of 2.5 and a 3.0 GPA in the SJS major.

Awarding of the scholarship:

The School of Justice Studies Scholarship Committee will review all applications received. The SJS Scholarship will be awarded using a rubric that evaluates academic performance, service and essay responses. Students who are recommended by the committee to receive the scholarship may be asked to complete a personal interview with the committee. Final awards for the scholarship will not be determined until all applications have been reviewed and all interviews are completed.

The SJS Scholarship will be awarded to a maximum of ten students per academic year. The scholarship provides $1,500 per semester, for a total of 8 semesters. For renewal of an existing scholarship, the grantee must meet all the minimum eligibility requirements.For students who fail to meet the requirements he/she will be placed on probation. Please note, scholarship recipients who are placed on probation more than two times throughout the course of the scholarship will forfeit the scholarship and are not eligible to re-apply.

Grantees of the SJS scholarship will commit to assist in the continued development of the major. This may include mentorship of incoming students, attending events to promote the major, and helping to develop partnership with social justice organizations.
