PositionSummary

The Driver operates a tanker truck to transport and deliver petroleum products to customers by applying knowledge of commercial driving regulations and roads in the area. The Driver will be responsible for driving to and from designated locations, verifying loads to shipping papers, maintaining record of duty status according to state and federal regulations, and performing pre-trip and post-trip inspections.

Essential Responsibilities

1 / Safe and legal operation of a commercial motor vehicle for the safe and timely transportation of fuel from origin to destination. Apply knowledge of commercial driving and skills in maneuvering vehicle at varying speeds in difficult situations, such as heavy traffic, inclement weather and in or out of tight loading and unloading areas. Must be able to back up equipment in all types of weather and conditions. This includes going forward and backing up long distances, around corners, and in and around very tight corners. Must be able to hook and unhook tanker from tractor. / Daily
2 / Inspect truck for defects and safe operating condition before, during and after trips and submit a written report on the condition of the truck at the end of each trip or tour of duty. / Daily
3 / Check shipping papers to determine the nature of load and to check for accuracy. / Daily
4 / Proper loading and unloading of product to assure safety and minimal risk of damage to cargo and danger to people and the environment. / Daily
5 / Maintain records required for compliance with state and federal regulations including driver’s record of duty status, mileage records, and other records required by law. / Daily
6 / Resolve vendor and customer concerns and service requests; follow up; document. / Daily
7 / Promptly report any delays due to break downs, weather or traffic conditions or other emergencies, or in the event of irregularities relating to pickup or delivery of cargo. Report highway safety hazards noted enroute. Report all accidents involving driver or company equipment. / Daily
8 / Perform all duties in accordance with company policies and procedures, and comply with all federal, state and local regulations for the safe operation of a commercial motor vehicle. / Daily
The essential responsibilities require the following Physical/Mental/Sensory Abilities:
1 / Sit and remain alert while driving a tractor trailer(tanker) for an aggregate period of up to 11 hours.
2 / Enter and exit the truck cab frequently (8-10 times per day). Cab floor level is generally from 36 to66 inches above ground level, with entry and exit achieved with the assistance of various configurations of steps and hand-holds; also requires occasional bending, climbing, squatting and balancing.
3 / Shift gears and operate foot pedals. Reach above shoulder level; bend at and below waist level for maneuvering and directing the controls to operate the truck. Operate controls for loading and unloading product at processing plant. Open and close cargo doors. Efforts include grasping, fine manipulation, and repetitive motion.
4 / Ascend/descend stairs and ladders located on trucks, trailers, and on facilities and equipment at loading and delivery sites.
5 / Maneuver fuel hoses in, around, and through all types of equipment (requires bending, stooping, kneeling, pulling, and pushing all types of hoses and equipment).
6 / Operate computerized equipment, including fine manipulation.
7 / Fuel vehicles and check oil and coolant levels.
8 / Move about inside and outside buildings.
9 / Lift up to 40 lbs (unassisted).
10 / Observe and identify surroundings.
11 / Judge distances and spatial relationships so as to see objects where and as they actually are.
12 / Recognize colors.
13 / Distinguish sounds.
14 / Comprehend and exchange detailed information, including conveying it to others accurately, loudly, and/or quickly.
15 / Detect by touch and smell.
16 / Concentrate, recognize, remember, reason, and make decisions.
17 / Mental ability to handle receipts, read maps, road signs, maintain record of duty status, etc.
18 / Meet the medical standards required of drivers by the US Dept. of Transportation and satisfactorily pass drug and alcohol testing.
The essential responsibilities include working under the following Working Conditions:
1 / Typically spend 40-60% of duty time in the cab of a truck. While driving, operators are exposed to noise and vibration levels which may be higher than those typically experienced in passenger cars. May spend 20-40% of time out of doors exposed to potentially difficult environmental conditions. When outside, may spend 20% of time standing and 20% of time walking on surfaces such as bare ground, gravel, concrete, wood and metal.
2 / Must be able to tolerate exposure to dust, fumes, odors, water, noise, heights, confined spaces, fluctuations in temperature (hot, cold), and wet and/or humid conditions.
3 / Subject to frequent interruptions.
4 / Subject to hostile or emotionally upset individuals.
5 / Must be willing to work, when necessary beyond normal working hours and on weekends.
6 / Position includes some risk to physical and/or mental health and safety (i.e., exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment, etc.); may be subject to irregular work schedules to accommodate freight movements, long trips, short notice for assignment of a trip, tight delivery schedules, delays enroute, temperature, weather and outside environment extremes, and other stresses and fatigues related to driving a large commercial motor vehicle on crowded streets and highways in all kinds of weather.
The essential responsibilities require the following Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
1 / Good communications skills (ability to read and write, follow written and verbal instructions, and communicate effectively in English).
2 / Ability to perform simple mathematical calculations.
3 / Knowledge of vehicle safety and control systems, DOT regulations governing safe driving, hours of service, inspection and maintenance.
4 / Strong interpersonal skills (courteous, professional, patient).
5 / Good judgment and problem solving skills.
6 / Good organizational skills (ability to manage multiple tasks, adapt to changing priorities, and meet deadlines).
7 / Basic computer skills.

Minimum Job Qualifications

Level of Education
High School graduate or equivalent preferred.
Technical or Professional License(s)/Certification(s)
Valid Commercial Driver’s License (class A) with tanker and hazmat endorsements and ability to get TWIC qualified, with a good driving record.
Current Medical Examiners Certificate.
Level of Experience
At least 2 years of commercial tanker truck driving experience.
Age
At least age 23.

Primary contacts are withsupervisor, co-workers, customers, and terminal managers.

Supervision

Expected to perform independently and exercise good judgment. Does not supervise other employees.
