2015 WESTERN CHALLENGE CUP

EDMONTON EXPRESS ARE WESTERN CHAMPS!

The Edmonton Express (U-13) joined the elite “Triple Crown” club in Minor ball hockey, as they captured the Western Challenge Cup championship. They also won a gold at the Alberta Provincials, and they claimed the Edmonton City title as well. It will be a season to remember for the kids, coaches, and parents … not very many teams have won the Triple Crown.

The Express had a great run at the Westerns, which were held in Surrey, BC in mid-July. They went a perfect 4-0-0 during the round-robin … outscoring their opponents 17-5 in those games. They started off with a 5-0 win over the Valley, BC league, and followed that up with a 6-2 win over the hometown Surrey team. They beat Ridge Meadows, BC by a 3-1 score, then finished the round-robin with a narrow 3-2 win over Victoria, In the semi, the Express whipped Delta, BC by a score of 8-3 and advanced to the gold medal game. In the final, there was no stopping the Edmonton team, as they edged out Metro Vancouver by a 6-4 count. Strong offence, great goaltending, and solid defence all contributed to their success, and the coveted gold medal.

The other Edmonton team also participated in the U-13 Westerns. The Edmonton Xtreme club started well, a solid 3-1 win over Richmond. After that, things did not go well for Edmonton. They lost 8-2 to Metro Vancouver, they dropped a 6-1 decision to Delta, BC, and rounded out the tourney with a 4-1 loss to the Tri-City, BC team. Goals were hard to come by for the Xtreme … only 7 goals in 4 games was not enough. Riley Kirton had a great tourney, as he lead the team with 4 goals and 5 points total. The Xtreme will be a strong team if they stick together … we hope they return and challenge again at the 2016 W.C.C. Championships.

Delta, Surrey, and Ridge Meadows leagues (all from BC) were the big winners, as they won 3 medals each. Thanks to Surrey for hosting the 2015 Western Challenge Cup … they did a great job and we appreciate their efforts. The 2016 host site will be decided soon by the Canadian Ball Hockey Association.
