EDLD 5311 Fundamentals of Leadership

Week 5 Assignment

Overview and Directions

This week’s assignment focuses on the development of your Internship Plan. This plan will serve as the final exam for this course, so make sure you apply quality standards.

Your Internship Plan will include knowledge and skill areas you wish to address as you build your leadership capacity, as well as activities that you plan to undertake to develop those knowledge and skills. Each of the activities you suggest will be aligned with a State Board for Educator Certification principal competency and skill area. You will develop a draft of your Internship Plan, then meet with your school site supervisor, who will suggest revisions. You will then submit a final draft of your Internship Plan, and include it in your portfolio.

You should set up a time to meet with your school site supervisor about your Internship Plan as soon as possible, to avoid scheduling conflicts. Do not wait until after you have completed your draft plan to set up your meeting, but be sure to bring all of the required documents to the meeting with your supervisor.

Week 5 Assignment, Part 1: Draft Internship Plan

Your first task is to develop a draft of your Internship Plan. The two major components of this process are:

·  Review of documentation. Prior to listing specific activities in your leadership plan, review the following 11 documentation areas. Your purpose is to make a list of general or specific skills or knowledge areas that you want to develop during the internship.

o  TELSA – Note any tasks you rated high in difficulty, importance, and frequency.

o  Attributes of Leaders – Note any attributes you want to further develop.

o  Task vs. People Profile – Note any need for a better balance or to increase both.

o  Gaps in vita – Note any gaps in vita categories, particularly Leadership Experience.

o  Interviews – Note any relevant suggestions from interviewees.

o  Leadership Book Summaries – Note any advice from the literature.

o  Ten Leadership Skills – Note particular skills you want to further practice and develop.

o  Needs of the School (Goals, Improvement Plan, etc.) – Note any needs you should address during your internship. Seek advice from the site supervisor.

o  Project(s) – Leading one or more projects is required. Seek advice from the site supervisor.

o  General Leadership Areas – If you listed any general areas from above and are uncertain about a specific activity or activities, discuss with your site supervisor.

o  Consider any activities listed as Beyond Expectations from the Week 5 lecture.

·  Organizing the internship plan. The details of the organization plan are outlined below. The basic assignment requires you to outline activities in your plan that will assist you in acquiring knowledge and skills needed to become competent in addressing and practicing the nine TExES Principal competencies.

The Internship Plan should be organized according to the nine SBEC principal competencies.

Under the nine competencies listed below, you will find a total of 38 skill areas, with a notation of the page(s) in the School Leader Internship text relating to each skill area. The text describes the skills, and provides examples of activities you might include in your plan. While the list of activities described is not exhaustive, it will provide good suggestions and a model to follow.

At the bottom of the list of sample activities is an activity called “Other.” If you choose not to include a listed activity from the text, you may write in another related activity. “Other” related activities are typically chosen according to school needs, goals, and differing opportunities. Your site supervisor will assist in choosing “Other” activities.

In some cases, embedded intern hours from other courses will suffice for the particular skill area. The minimum of 140 hours in the three following domains is over and above the hours of embedded intern hours from other courses. Embedded intern hours required in other courses will be approximately 140 hours. Thus, the internship should conclude with at least 280 hours.

You are advised to plan for at least one activity in each of the 38 skill areas found in the text. Pencil in a check mark on any activity/activities (or Other) in your text prior to meeting with your site supervisor and completing your internship plan.
