President Shirley Kukk, Rotary Club of Chandler, Arizona, USA.

Guests

Samantha and Monique Lowcock guests of Lisa Lowcock.

Chairman Norm Mollica introduced his lovely daughter Lisa Lowcock. Lisa told us how she grew up with an Australian-Italian family background. She told us how she experienced the tomato sauce ritual, the fishing at Black Rock, the holidays at Sorrento, and the Portsea Life Saving Club membership. Lisa told us about her first aid skills andin passing she mentioned the fact she is a Primary School teacher. Basketball was also a passion for Lisa and under the coaching of father Norm the team enjoyed success. As a member of the Rotaract Club of Broadmeadows Lisa travelled to Japan on a cultural exchange. Through Rotaract Lisa met husband Andrew. Lisa rates her family days as the greatest time of her life. All in all a top “the person behind the badge day” and we hope to hear more from Lisa in the near future.

The Fellowship committee has hit 2006 running. A sub committee has met twice for what looks like a promising new venture for our club. Richard and his “Sub” are investigating the possibility of running a “Garden Walk” in March. Much of the spade work has already been done. We have some sponsors for the event as well as some of the venues. All we need are three more homes in the Essendon or Moonee Ponds area to let us have a walk through their gardens for a weekend and with what has been done already we should have a real winner.

Your help is needed:if you know of a friend who would be able to help us with our project please contact Richard Lawrence as soon as possible and we will do the rest.

And talking of Richard, you cannot accuse him of not being internationally minded. Have you seen the cover on his mobile phone? The colours of the Italian flag figure prominently. I bet he has “Nessun dorma” for his ring tone.

From the Almoner: Ray Carter is in the MelbournePrivateHospital. Ray will have an aorta replacement plus some other work. The operation will take some 5 hours and every member of our club wishes Ray a very speedy recovery. PP Jack Honson suggests should you wish to pay Ray a visit please give Norma a call first and make sure it is ok to visit. Ray will be at the Melbourne Private for some 6 or 7 days and after that he will be at the Dorset Rehabilitation Unit.

Ian Thomas will next week enter the Western GeneralHospital for what will be a very short stay. It is only a precautionary check up and Ian should be back with us the following week. Good luck Ian from all of us.

From the International Committee

Cathy Nicou is asking members if they could purchase some “1 cent” exercise books. The books are available at “Officeworks” till the end of the month. The cost is 1 cent per book and the limit is 20 per person. Give the books to Cathy when you purchase them and we will get them to some lucky children in Myanmar.

For Sale:a rare opportunity to purchase a very special coin. The Perth mint has struck a SilverOne DollarCoin commemorating 100 of Rotary. This is the only coin struck with a limited 100,000 units for sale. Our club has 1 coin and the cost is $75.90, contact President Shirley if you are interested.

Also for sale:2 Rotary car metal badges given to the club by PP Wal Dibben. The value of the badges is $55.00 and Maurice Mollica is the person to see for those.

Thank you girls

President Shirley introduced Samantha and Monique Lowcock to the members present. Samantha and Monique have worked hard for the club in affixing address labels and stamps to the envelopes so that the members would receive Contact on time each week. Thank you girls for a job well done.

VCE Results

Congratulations to Kyle Dalmau on his VCE results. He has been accepted into Podiatry at La Trobe. Best wishes in your studies.

Can you help with the Commonwealth Games?

Stephen Chandler is calling for help. A team of seven helpers is needed for a week at the village. The task is not too hard and the remuneration is good. Call Stephen for further information.

Money Saving Measures
1. Price of seedlings comes to mind – calculate the cost of seedlings per punnet and buy the best value punnets.
2. Bulk buy – bulk mulch, manure, compost or soil is cheaper – consider the option of bulk buy items.
3. Do your homework – always buy plants specifically for your climate, soil, and sun conditions of the planting position.
4. Youth is the go – plant younger native threes and shrubs, they often overtake more mature plants within a year and the cost of younger trees is less than a more manure tree.
5. It is a good idea to fertilise roses and other shrubs at regular intervals during the summer, every four weeks or so.
Laugh a little
Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them later.
