Advisement Checklist

Edinboro University of Pennsylvania General Philosophy of Advising in the School of Education

The School of Education holds the students accountable for their own learning. However, we also value the support of an advisor. The state frequently enacts changes so it is important for our students to maintain ongoing communication with their advisors. We adhere to the policy that it is the advisor who shares the alternate pin number required for registration. We encourage all students to meet with their academic advisor at least once each semester to ensure that they have the guidance and support they need to successfully complete their pre-professional program of study.

Note: Education students must have a 2.8 GPA for candidacy and 3.0 to graduate.

Students must pass national exams in the areas of reading, math, and writing before candidacy, thus we encourage them to take these within the first year in the event that they may have to repeat the exams. Information about the PAPA Tests can be found at this website
Students should take English 101 and 102 and at least one math course (two are needed for candidacy for most majors). MATH 100 is a remedial course and does not count as the second math course. Additionally, most majors require SPED 210 and ECED 100 or ECED 120 before candidacy. Art, music, and HPE majors often have issues with scheduling so they do not have to take SPED prior to candidacy if it does not fit into the schedule.
HPE majors must also take HPE 133 and either HPE 220, HPE 225 or HPE 230 prior to being admitted to candidacy.
Students must take a literature course with the ENGL prefix. Refer to the Plan of Study for the best place for this. We apply it either to Core 1 or Distribution 1 areas. ENGL 301 IS NOT A LITERATURE COURSE.
Clearances are required during the freshman year and should be submitted to the department secretary. Copies are kept on file, but please emphasize that the students must keep the ORIGINAL CLEARANCE DOCUMENTS as they will be required to produce them throughout the program. The clearances required in the state of PA are:
  1. Act 34 Criminal Record Check
  2. Act 151 Child Abuse Check
  3. Act 114 FBI Clearance
  4. TB Test (Ghering Health Center or family physician)
  5. Act 24 Arrest/Conviction Report and Certification Form

Please emphasize that a 2.8 GPA is required for candidacy and that students must earn at least a C in all courses required for their major including those designated in general education.
