Instrumental Music Course Syllabus

Purpose

The purpose of the J.E. Williams Band is to instill in all

people an awareness of music’s important role for the enrichment

of the human spirit.

Repertoire

Members of the band class will study various genres of music, possibly from

each period (Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary).

Compositions will be evaluated with weekly activities, along with

participating in various competitions.

Participation

Students are required to participate each day for grade achievement.

Grades are also earned from scheduled performances and instrumental assessments. Failure toparticipate will result to grades that range from fair to dissatisfactory. Participation also includes, yet not limited to:

  • Bringing and utilizing 2 (#2) pencils, instruments and methods books
  • Positive behavior conducive to the learning environment

Grading System

All students will earn points based on clarity, confidence, tone and

performance attendance. From the combined factors, each grade

will be tabulated for 1 final grade. The grading scale is as followed:

A90-100Student interprets and demonstrates and excellent ability to

perform the music using correct articulation, pitches,

accents, phrasing, breath control, posture, technique and

intonation.

B80-89Student interprets and demonstrates a good ability to

perform the music using correct articulation, pitches,

accents, phrasing, breath control, posture, technique and

intonation.

C70-79Students interprets and demonstrates a satisfactory ability

to perform the music using correct articulation, pitches,

accents, phrasing, breath control, posture, technique and

intonation

D60-69Students interprets and demonstrates a little ability to

perfom the music using correct articulation, pitches,

accents, phrasing, breath control, posture, technique and

intonation.

F0-59Students interprets and demonstrates a poor ability to

perform the music using correct articulation, pitches,

accents, phrasing, breath control, posture, technique and

intonation.

Behavior

Band members are expected and will demonstrate a behavior that

is respectful to the teacher and themselves both inside and outside

of the music department. Students are asked to think logically and

maintain a positive attitude. Behavior that is conducted otherwise

will result in suspensions from competitions and fieldtrips, discipline

referrals to the administrators and/or parental/guardian phone

calls.

Dress Code

All band members are required to purchase a uniformed shirt with pants

Determine for performances. Each student must display neatness in appearance along with personal hygiene. Any student withouta uniform will be prohibited from a performance, unless circumstances are cleared by the conductor.
