Briefly describe the activity/strategy, providing enough detail so that a colleague can replicate the activity/strategy.
1. Introduction At the beginning of each class, I write on the board a quote that is connected to either the material that will be covered that class or to events (e.g., quizzes) that the students will be experiencing in class
2.Set-up & Supplies There is no set up other than finding and choosing quotes.
3.Directions I write the quote on the board and ask for a volunteer to read the quote. Afterwards, I ask students what they think the quote means. I point out how the quote is relevant to what they are experiencing in our class.
What worked well?I only have anecdotal evidence, and from that it seems like the quotes are beneficial. I have noticed students copying the quotes, and from the discussions, it seems that students find the quotes interesting.
What would you change?Nothing.
Would you use the activity/strategy again? Why or why not?Yes, I will continue to use this strategy. Since I teach reading to ESL students, it seems to be a very valuable strategy for several reasons. First, it gives my students a little practice reading in class. Second, it requires students to often imply meaning. Third, the lessons that the quotes try to impart are helpful for student motivation, self-responsibility, etc. Finally, I hope that the quotes stimulate a desire for students to read more from the people who are quoted.
Please describe any student learning and/or changes that you observed after the implementation of the activity/strategy.I haven't observed any changes in student learning per se. However, I think students are finding the quotes interesting and meaningful. Whether that will translate into stronger student motivation is not certain; however, it seems likely that it will given what I stated in my answer to the previous question.
