EBC Management Structure

EBC Management Structure

/ February 2013
EDITOR - Carol Baker
The past month has gone by very quickly, but hasn’t time in general. No thought provoking comments to make for you this month. However, if you have access to the internet, don’t forget to check out our website. It covers many different topics than the newsletter. Apologies to those who don’t have the internet.
FROM THE BOARD ROOM
We are rapidly approaching our 2013 Annual General Meeting scheduled for 10am Sunday 14th April. The notice for the 2013 Annual General Meeting and the Agenda is included with this newsletter. Nowis the time when four (4) elected positions on the Board of Directors and all elected positions on associated EBC committees are open for nomination. I urge you all to consider putting yourself forward for nomination to a Board or Committee position. It is a rewarding and interesting experience. Position descriptions for the Board of Director positions are on the notice board at the clubhouse. Nomination forms for Board positions are now available at the club.
“A” Green
The new grass on A Green is now starting to come through and the green is starting to get a green look about it. Our Green keeper Daniel has been frustrated by the variable weather conditions, and the heavy rain we had a week or so back didn’t help. Daniel prepared a report on the green for the Board of Directors and a copy of this report is on the club notice board for those who are interested.
The EBC Flag
The Board of Directors has decided that it is time our club flag was upgraded with a new and modern design. We have a very colourful and attractive club badge that we all wear on our uniforms and we believe this should be incorporated into our flag. As such, the Board decided to run a competition amongst the EBC members to design a new club flag. The winning design, as determined by the Board of Directors, will win a $50 voucher from the “Resting Toucher” bowls shop. Entries will close on Sunday 31st March, 2013 and the winner announced at the AGM. Entries in the competition should be in an envelope marked “EBC Flag Competition” and placed in the letterbox in the meeting room outside the office door.
Life Membership
Nominations for life membership have now closed. The Board of Directors has endorsed the nominations for two members for Life Membership of EBC. These nominations will be put to the members attending the AGM to vote on in a secret ballot and if accepted, those two members will be inducted as Life Members at the AGM.

EBC Management Structure

At the Special General Meeting held on Friday 15th February, the proposal to adopt the revised management structure was overwhelmingly agreed to by the members present. This new structure will come into effect immediately after the 2013 AGMs for the current Men's and Ladies Section Committees. Elections for committee positions held prior to the AGMs will be as per the revised management structure.

Barefoot Bowls

It has been decided to extend the Barefoot Bowls for an additional 2 weeks, ie, for Friday 22nd February and Friday 1st March. There will be no entry fee for bowlers for these last two weeks to compensate for the diminishing daylight hours. Barefoot Bowls has been a tremendous success both financially and also securing new members to EBC. Ian Thomas has worked tirelessly on this since its inception and is to be congratulated on the fantastic results it has achieved. Thanks also to all those who helped on the Friday nights and we ask that your help is continued for these two extra weeks.

Bob Steele

Executive Director.

LADIES COMMITTEE - Barbara Overson, President

Thursday 14th March is our President, Guest & Delegates Day. Last year was most successful with 80 or more ladies present. See if we can better it this year. Ask a bowling friend from another club to join us on this day. Morning tea from 9.30 a.m. (Betty Gaunt's biscuits), bowling at 10.30 a.m., and then a lovely lunch at about 1 p.m. We have 2 Super Vets. badges (over 80's)to be presented by the President of Sandbelt, Mrs.Jan Shaw, and presents to all invited guests. Be there!! List is up. Past members of our club will also be there.

Congratulations to all 4 Mid-week sides as they are all in the finals - well done EBC.

TUESDAY PENNANT - Bette Viney

The Selection Committee is very excited to announce that at the end of the Pennant Season all four sides finished in the four and will be playing off in the finals commencing 26 February.

A practice match has been arranged for Tuesday, 19 February and all players are expected to attend on this day.

EBC is very proud of this achievement and we wish all sides every success in the finals.

SPONSORSHIP - Barbara Cheshire

Peter Brown from Brownlowe Extensions is our sponsor for “Barefoot Bowls”, if you or anyone you know is thinking of extending or renovating their homes give this sponsor a call.

When does a Bowler need a Builder?

  • Probably not for your first home and thereby qualify for a 1st home owners grant.
  • If the kids have all left home (at last!) then a three bedroom upper level extension is probably not needed.

BUT

  • If you would like to renovate and modernise your home, perhaps a sparkling new kitchen and alfresco area or an en-suite, WIR off your master bedroom or just biff out a few walls to open up the living, dining, family area, then you need a builder that specialises in renovations and extensions.
  • Where do I find one of those, I hear you ask?? You can look for builders signs out the front of existing homes and if the project is well advanced, then knock on the door and ask the “happy” or “embattled” home owner about their builder. Repeat until you find a good one.
  • I don’t want to do all this I hear you say – well then give Peter Brown and his team a call at Brownlowe Extensions! With over 50 years experience in the building industry, we can give you a list of clients names and phone numbers so you can ring and ask about “their” builder or I can make a time to call at your home and discuss your ideas.
  • Meanwhile grab one of brochures from your Bowls Club or at Aspendale Gardens IGA or check out our website
  • We listen to our clients and take pride in all aspects of every project.

Call Janine at the office on 9857 4711.

Lifestyle Communitiesis a new sponsor for the club; they are constructing the new village at 29 Wells Road, Chelsea Heights. I believe we already have a member living there. When completed they will have a bowling green, swimming pool, spa. gym, theatre and clubhouse. Graham Elliss is our contact there and we will be meeting him on our “Mixed Medley Day”. As part of our sponsorship he requests that 30-40 members attend a “free” lunch with a short presentation and introduction to the village, in September and March for the next 2 years, it will be on a Thursday and I am sure we will get the numbers.

Margaret Burke has made a booking at RedwoodGardens for a Chinese meal on Friday March 8th. They have been a very good sponsor of our club for many years, so come along and enjoy a lovely meal, friendship with fellow club members and support our sponsor.

HAVE YOUR SAY …
Most clubs need volunteers. Our club is no different. It would be good to see some new faces volunteering to help with the 'barefoot bowlers' on a Friday evening from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. It is not a hard job, and you will get satisfaction from doing this job when you see the happy faces on new bowlers having a lot of fun. (Barbara Overson)

(Don’t forget, a section of the EBC Newsletter is availablefor members to put forward their opinions, constructive criticisms and/or suggestions in writing and submitting them to the Board Secretary either by letter or by email to the club on: This will be known as the “Have Your Say” column and is open to all EBC members.)

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR THE PATTERSONLAKESPRIMARY SCHOOL BOWLS PROGRAM
Edithvale Bowls Club is again participating in this program and we need volunteers to help. The dates (all Thursdays) are 7, 21 and 28 March, starting at 9.30 am for one hour. SOCIAL NEWS - Margaret Burke & Social Committee

With functions that require buses and food bookings, with minimum numbers, would members please check to see if their names are on the list and contact me if they are not going. In future anyone who has not paid by the given date, I’ll assume will not be coming.

I’m pleased to report our trip to the Greyhounds was very successful, especially winning the Club Challenge Race, giving the Club a cheque for $1,000.00. Our photo with the clever dog “All the Zeez” was on Facebook, but I believe they are sending us a photo.

So, if you are interested in another day at Sandown, put your names in the black book. Prizes – 1st $3,000.00, 2nd $1,500.00, 3rd $450.00. You never know your luck. It will be the 9th race.

CONGRATULATIONS – JOAN & ROBERT LOCKHART

On 21st February 2013 Robert (Bob) Lockhart and Joan Darvell will celebrate 60 years of married life which began with their vows, taken at the Presbyterian Church, North Road, Ormond, Victoria all those years ago.

They first locked eyes on each other at a Gymnasium Dance when Joan aged 15 (accompanying her parents) was still a student of Mac. Robertson Girls’ High School and Bob aged 19 was an insurance worker. Bob was not one to dance with just any girl, usually choosing instead to accompany and dance with his sister. On this night however he made a b-line for the young Joan and thus began a courtship of 4 years. They married in February 1953 and lived with Joan’s parents for a time before moving to premises above her Uncle Alex’s butcher shop in Elsternwick.

Bob had joined the Police force in 1950 and Joan took up a position with “Chartres”, distributors of Remington Typewriters in Market Lane, Melbourne.

Joan & Bob moved to their own home in BonBeach in 1956, and then to a Unit in Carrum in 1993. Joan’s mum Jess Darvell was a well accomplished bowler at Carrum, and lived in a flat at the rear of the Bonbeach property for several decades.

Bob and Joan were both Presidents’ of the Patterson River Bowling Club, both were umpires and Bob took it one step further, to become a coach.

They moved to Edithvale Bowling Club around 1995. It was less than 3 years till Joan found herself in the top job again, and served us as President for 2 years at a time when Edithvale Ladies experienced (perhaps) their best pennant result...winning the A1 Metro Pennant flag for 98/99. Bob also took a turn in the Men’s Presidency, but was previously elected as a member of the 1995 “Inaugural Board of Management”.

Both Bob and Joan have served our club extremely well on the “Board” (Bob as a member but both in their President years) and in many other capacities. Joan in particular was on “Catering Committee” (a job no-one wants today) for 8 maybe 10 years, always done with a smile. Joan has been a selector, this time around for 5 years.

During their marriage they travelled to the UK twice, taking in the sites of Scotland & Europe.

Bob and Joan have a daughter Gayle, son in law Barry and son Neil, daughter in law Hazel and 2 grown up grand children, Nicole & Brad.

The “Still” happy couple will celebrate this Sunday with 30 family and friends, near home. Well done to you both....what a combo!!

VISITORS BOOK

Members are reminded that it is a legal requirement that visitors sign the club’s Visitors Book. The book can be found near the flat screen TV.

Persons who are not required to sign the Visitors Book are visitors from another club who are bowling and our own members.

Persons WHO MUST sign the Visitor’s Book are visitors from other clubs who are NOT bowling, family members or friends who are not members and are visiting the club.

Non compliance with the above could result in the loss of EBC’s Liquor Licence. Visitors must sign the Visitors Book, whether they purchase alcohol or not. Please be mindful that with the loss of our Liquor Licence our Club would never recover financially.

JOKES

Lawn bowls is a hotbed of drug use, with sports scientists using all sorts of concoctions to keep players alive for their next game.

There is also evidence of widespread corruption, with meat raffle prizes offered to bribe players to keep quiet about the sport’s sordid goings on.

Arthur Crimshaw, head of Australian Bowling, denies any wrong doing saying it is perfectly natural for players to want to be kept alive. But he refused to answer many questions at a press conference, mainly because his hearing aid was turned down too low.

Some players have been found to be wearing electronic devices to artificially stimulate their heart, giving them an advantage over other players who don’t use the device and are … well, dead.

Others are taking stimulants to keep them awake during the game.

These drugs have also been passed to spectators so they don’t fall asleep when games are televised.

The government has announced a probe into the sport.

Crimshaw said his players were used to probes, just as long as they’ve been sterilized and are not too cold.
