  2. Old Business

a)No old business.

  1. New business

a)Principal’s Update

  1. Mr. Salmon went over the high point of the School Improvement Plan (SIP) that was email to the members. A focus on “higher level’ questioning in all classes is new to the SIP this year, in addition to delivering Professional Development to teachers in a smaller, focused group setting.
  2. Questions about Homecoming/Prom, and the logistics in the parking lots during sporting events were addressed. Several areas of improvement were discussed and will be implemented in succeeding events.
  3. Our Positive Behavior Support program (PBS) which is a District initiative, has applied for a National Recognition Award.
  4. Mr. Salmon then discussed EGHS VAM (Value Added Measure) score which is the output of an algorithm that assigns a value to the teachers’ impact in student learning. A score on the VAM scale of 36 is indicative of student learning gains. The EGHS average VAM was 40, the highest of all schools in the Central Area of Brevard County Public Schools.
  5. Mr. Mike Shelton and CIE Global Perspectives students are going to be featured in an education article to appear in the Orlando Sentinel.
  6. Anchor Hour is settling in and off to a good start. When interim reports came out, 881 (non-repeating) students were on the D-F list. That number had dropped to 670 at the end of a week of intensive Anchor Hour work. The Administrative team met with each of those students, focusing on a plan to get them off the D-F list. Last year, 575 (non-repeating) students were on the D-F list at the end of the first nine weeks. Mr. Salmon projects that we will have 20% fewer students on the D-F list this year as a result of the Anchor Hour initiative. In support of the Anchor Hour initiative, the top five clubs in terms of membership will have their meetings moved from Anchor Hour to before/after school to free up more time for academic support.
  7. FCAT retakes are finishing up tomorrow. Traditionally the pass rate for this retest is in the low 20% range. The hope is to move that number to the mid-30% range.
  8. The BBQ Cookout fundraiser for Student Government will be on the football field tomorrow night.
  9. Fall sports are wrapping up, and Winter sports are kicking off.
  10. We are fully staffed in all teaching positions
  11. This weeks’ faculty meeting was very positive with a focus on collegial collaboration and a celebration of all the good things that are happening on the EGHS campus and our community.

b)Parent Leadership Report

  1. Big emphasis on the ½ cent sales tax
  2. BPS mobile app was touted as well as the BPS Facebook page as a way of getting updates and information sent in a timely manner
  3. A video demo of a science class was presented highlighting the differences in instruction between “traditional” direct instruction and student driven Common Core instructional delivery
  4. This Saturday (October 11th) the District will be hosting a class on Parenting in Today’s World
  5. Dr. Binggeli spoke on efforts to convince Florida state legislators to return more control over educational decisions to the local school district level.
